Foreword
63_foreword_by_andrew_d_huberman_ph_d.txt is table-of-contents only; the real foreword text is entirely in 04_foreword.txt.Motivation as peculiar biology
Huberman opens on motivation as peculiar biology. All animals share roughly the same goal-pursuit circuits and use dopamine as a currency for determining effort value. Identical machinery whether dog, horse, raccoon, or person. Humans add an expanded prefrontal cortex: apply new rules to basic drives; get motivated by the idea of something, not only emotions or biological drives. Examples he lists: serving family, country, earn self-respect, fear, love, higher calling. That uniqueness also means no excuses: failure to motivate is failure to honor God-given species uniqueness.
He doubts Cam sat and thought about any of that. What Huberman claims to know: Cam honors and embodies that gift every single day; Huberman knows of no other human as hardworking or consistent across as many life domains.
Origin sketch Huberman tells
Cam's wild story in Huberman's telling:
- Boy in a broken home in a small Oregon town outside another small Oregon town
- Becomes athlete and drinker like his father
- Near-fatal accidents, potentially irreversible detours, increasingly deterministic circumstances
Why "predictable"? Motivation circuits have another human-unique feature: humans alone use them to become addicted to behaviors or substances that can lead to demise. Double-edged blade: same circuits drive phenomenally hard generative work and can destroy us.
Whether consciously or not, Cam internalized that. Took lack of childhood stability and internal frustration; decided to lean into bowhunting love; got sober; married; embraced joys and challenges of raising three children. "By any measure, he took the right road."
Love as fuel and Keep Hammering
Love is special: idea fused to emotion; does not only leverage dopamine, it generates it. Cam used bowhunting love for daily shooting practice; soon saw deeper woods, more efficient stalks, larger game require harder longer training. Runs became daily half- or full marathons before a full day's work, then shooting, garage lifting, home business, while devoted husband and father.
Eventually Joe Rogan learned of Cam's training and hunting. "Keep Hammering" framed as direct as Nike's "Just Do It," frankly more so because everyday: running, lifting, shooting, no matter what. No 21-day gimmicks or New Year's resolutions or flashy commercials. Unrelenting.
What sets Cam apart: not handed academic staircase or military road. Respectable trajectories, but no roadmap. Looked at what he had; looked inward; understood motivation is not one choice but a series of choices; made the one choice to lean into loves as organizational driving force. Teaches hunting online and on podcast; hunts and shares meat; runs and shares running. Everything steeped in that love. Huberman believes God offers special powers through that portal. Shared circuitry: not only what we do with it; what we use as fuel.
Close charge
Marvels listed: 100-mile races on badly broken feet; superhuman schedule; unbreaking devotion to wife and kids. Feel Cam's love as fuel. God offered Cam as example of what is possible and how. Question: what do we do with that feeling; how harness toward own best life, own right road. Undeniable shows you how. Signed Andrew D. Huberman, Ph.D.
Foreword map: biology shared; fuel chosen; Cam as exhibit.

Reaching the Top
Twenty-mile universe
Teen Cam: big trip equals town pizza, movie, or bar among "flatlanders." Head down; no reason to look up. Origin already known to readers of Endure: Roy Roth, bowhunting, gaze lifts to eastern Oregon mountains and Eagle Cap Wilderness, which became his world. Bigger world, stronger mission. Connections multiply. Tweet invitation to Los Angeles to talk bowhunting and fitness with Joe Rogan; quest larger than he thought; looks at any mountain wondering what is on the other side.
Expansion chain he states
How it always starts: person with no reason to dream; head down; heart desolate; then little changes:
- One person believing in you gives motivation
- One person doubting you gives fuel
- One passion gives purpose
- One victory gives confidence to keep going
Small journey first; refrain: if he did it, anyone can.
Endureequals origin story;
Undeniableequals next installment. Rogan doors opened: Olympians, fighters, runners, intellectuals. He said in
Endurehe could fill a book with outlier lessons; this is that book.
Title origin (Rogan) and the Kobe contrast
Cam told Rogan immersing among winners adds tools; run alongside best; learn mindsets; anyone risen high learned from greats. Rogan: "Be undeniable"; Michael Jordan as exhibit (greatest or near; undeniable person; few get there; haters come; haters can suck it; they lie to themselves). Cam also cites Allen Iverson on Kobe: while others went to the club, Kobe went to the gym; that was Mamba; Iverson looked up though older. Only one Kobe because he worked harder. That separates the undeniable.
Daily questions and Lift Run Shoot
What drives him for decades:
- How can I become the best I can be?
- What can I do today to become better than yesterday?
- How can I be better tomorrow than today?
Study outliers (track, MMA, scientists, any discipline) for an edge. Podcast: Keep Hammering Collective (winners, successes, failures, winning mindset). Before interviews, guests share Lift Run Shoot (any order):
- Run to build endurance for long hunts
- Lift to build pack-out strength (strength never a weakness)
- Shoot accurately because fitness without the hit wastes the other two
Ultimate daily goal: hurt; unless outdoing everybody, not offering best. Suffering together before the interview is the icebreaker. Hopes podcast and book glean tools others can use. Hollow criticism from cheap seats holds little weight when tunnel vision is on becoming undeniable. Hates giving advice; no blueprint; will listen to outliers' roadmaps and share. Closing fork: elite or normal? Elite means step out of normal habits of thought. Study masters; apply nuggets; then who knows what is possible.

Choose Your Suffering
Two Davids: first Lift Run Shoot with Goggins (2018)
Nobody wants a race to the death with David Goggins. First outlier Lift Run Shoot weekend in Cam's town (2018): Saturday plan = Frozen Trail Run 50K, then bows, lifting, UFC. Guest arrived a day early; warm-up run up Mount Pisgah. Cam reads runners in the first few hundred yards. Goggins's long stride never shortened uphill. Cam assumed Nashville flatland legs would gas; they did not. Stride never seemed to change. "This is gonna be rough." Goggins never faded to the top. Afterward: calm, serious David (coffee-cup stoic) versus social-media Goggins (raw-meat mode). Cam appreciated a training partner who would push him. That was only the warm-up.
Truett note. Son Truett later held Guinness pull-ups-in-a-day; idea came solely because Goggins previously held the title. Family-level inspiration, not only Cam's.
Race day cold and rainy; everyone soaked. By mile 22 Goggins unties and removes shoes (torn feet, bleeding toes, lost nails: common ultra damage). Cam keeps chugging with brother Taylor Spike; doubts he will see Goggins again. Goggins catches up in a different groove. Last grade: Cam's calf locks; power-hike; Goggins takes off. At about 30 miles with a couple left, cameraman report: shirt off in cold rain, yelling "They don't fucking know me! They don't know me, son!" to nobody. Goggins crushed the second half. When it got hard he entered a different zone and got better. Cam: "This guy is different. And I loved it."
Same morph in the gym later that day. Incline-bench burnout sets aiming for 100 reps after already 600 total reps in the session. Trainer Eric McCormack counting. Truett (21) training with them. Cam's last set about 13-15. Goggins pushes past 19, 20, 21 shouting "They don't know me, son!" and "Who's gonna carry the boats and the logs?" Most people fatigue; he appeared to get stronger. Cam's gloss: when David becomes Goggins, look out; unstoppable; truly undeniable. Spirit class Cam loves: good hardworking people who embrace suffering; never waver; always know what you get.
Goggins in Can't Hurt Me: more than mind over matter; relentless self-discipline to schedule suffering into your day, every day.
Cam is always learning his breaking point. Drawn to challenges where success hinges on dealing with pain. Mountain bowhunting will make you question the misery. Sometimes he wonders if he is drawn to bowhunting and ultras because he likes the challenge or because he is good at suffering. He thinks the latter; he has been doing it a long time.
Divorce ache to rifle tags to Roy and the bow
Parents divorced when Cam was four going on five (dad star athlete, mom cheerleader). He refuses "broken home" as crutch; opposite stance. Still, hurt him and younger brother Pete. First school of excelling at suffering: wanted parents back together; ached for dad Bob Hanes, god-like legend on a pedestal. Pedestal never cracked the way other kids see parent flaws. Mom remarried; Cam hated stepdad for not being Bob; drama; lived with dad; missed Pete (who stayed with Mom; weaker dad bond because younger at divorce); dad busy with new business; Cam moved back to Mom. Olive branch: stepdad took Cam (15) and Pete (12) rifle hunting. Cam filled tags and shot accurately; still did not want to hang with stepdad (felt like disrespecting real dad).
At 19, buddy Roy Roth started him on bow. Timing perfect: needed the challenge; rifle was not offering it. First morning: big 6x7 bull stomping in, bugling; knelt shaking; arms tingly; doubted tiny arrow could kill; drew; missed; somehow got a second shot and blew that too. First-year success after 18 straight days: spike bull. Year two near hometown: 5-point bull, black bear, Pope and Young blacktail.
Next level: Eagle Cap, Oregon's largest roadless wilderness. Roy and Cam aimed for the most remote spot on the topo, about 400 miles from home. Hunting hard; country overwhelming; conditions extreme; missed comforts and loved ones; ache familiar. Embraced misery. Thought of family and dad a lot; irony: dad never bought a hunting license and did not get why anyone would hunt; still proud. Shared suffering with Roy built bonds. Before bowhunting, Cam's misery was hating life, loneliness, morning-after drinking. Wilderness offered growth misery. When Roy moved to Alaska early 1990s, Cam learned to suffer alone. "The pain felt wonderful." Rock-on-back truth serum: why he loves Lift Run Shoot.
Chris Williamson: Puritan ache, rock, chosen suffering
Fourth guest: Chris Williamson (Modern Wisdom). Childhood: only child, Stockton-on-Tees, unpopular, bullied, felt flawed and meant to be alone. Cam understood. High performers, Chris says, often come from insufficiency: prove worth to parent, teacher, bully, or friends. First "intellectual" Cam interviewed; stressed; became one of most popular episodes; "unchosen suffering" take went viral.
Chris path: uni club promoter (party for free) to successful business to late-20s Love Island as pinnacle of party-boy world to empty in tiny swim shorts to crab outgrowing shell to friends' podcast to own show 2018 to about 600 episodes by visit (about 5 years later).
Airport pickup to arrows at The Bow Rack (Springfield, opened 1971) to drive past childhood house and first hunt ground. Early-20s goal: trailer plus reliable truck equals set. Now: "playing with house money"; already won; should never have made it out; impostor fear someone will take house and life away; people who work harder never have what he has, so why should he? Chris shares the struggle: working-class / Puritan ethic ties deserved money and recognition to suffering associated with work, almost self-flagellation as tribute to God (medieval priests hoeing in sun for the work itself).
Warm-up Pisgah, then 72-lb rock from truck. Fog over 1,060-ft mountain; about 7 miles jog; rock relays. Lesson everyone learns: no good way to carry a giant rock up a mountain. Near summit Cam takes rock ahead; film crew catches Chris: respects Cam; elk chili will taste better; Chris can do hard cognitive work but struggles to push this hard without a reason. Performance without a purpose is one hell of a skill: no cheer, no race, no finish, no glory, yet Cam still performs. Rock labeled "Poser" in marker; pointless uphill; impressive because of that.
After summit: lift, then earned suffering for the day. Theme next day: when someone suffers there is never a more honest time; cannot fake it. Mob torture and military selection analogies (truth / who is weak). Cam asks if suffering is ultimate truth serum; Chris: opens people up; then chosen versus unchosen from Goggins Never Finished.
- Unchosen: parents die, relationships break, body fails; no control.
- Chosen: elect hard things to become stronger alloy; humble; remind mortality; prep for hypothetical media pile-on via thousand kettlebell plus cold-tub days.
- Performance without purpose: race, holiday, photo, or wedding goals are potent; near-max with no finish line is real power.
- Prove-others-wrong fuel: potent but toxic; Goggins on peace: war with yourself yields a lot of peace; maybe only way out is through.
- Peace versus discipline tension: more inner peace might mean less drive.
- Cam on balance: balanced people run a mile and eat a cookie; elites he knows are not balanced; peace in mountains; insomnia at home from unused miles; good day equals exhausted fellowship, not "balanced."
- Chris: Cam in top 0.1% of daily hard-thing people; many admire, few want the life.
- Scout metaphor: suffer ahead (wilderness, loneliness, forage) so army gets information; noble purpose.
- Onesie not outfit: cannot take training without four-hour sleep vibes, permanent discontent, bad childhood, loneliness at 13, decades of regret about leaving dad for mom and Pete; alchemy turns toxic into positive.
Eagle Cap: twelve years, ant perspective, scare stack
Then Roy to Alaska (contractor plus hunter legacy); Cam stayed Oregon. Hard to find partners; love-it-or-hate-it; sprawling insignificance too much for some; made Cam feel alive. Next about 12 years mostly alone; stopped wasting energy recruiting.
Exceptions: South Cox once (super tough); days 1-6 separate (Cox bull, Cam buck); day 7 together, Cam nice bull. Opening-day 6x6 solo: meat hung; llamas too tired; hiked 10 miles for help; Tim Thompson, cousin Joel, Greg Miller packed 12 miles to truck. All other times: isolation.
Wilderness awakening: if he dies back there, nothing changes (wind, animals, mountains). Society self-importance versus mountain ant: step on ant, keep going. Death every day in mountains with no bearing. Empowering, not crushing: must be at very best to survive and consistently kill bull elk with an arrow. Exciting: what challenges can I face? Prep required. Early: short scouts; no sat phone or Garmin inReach; addiction to positives outweighed fear.
Scare and skill stack:
- First wilderness black bear (cinnamon/blond) at 50 yards in a saddle (basin-to-swamp travel corridor); day after screwed-up bull; nervous trailing from high rocks; now after 50+ bears he would follow blood calmly and re-arrow if needed.
- Lightning: never camp by lone tree on high ridge; storms send people off mountain; choose safe sleep spots.
- Elk herd nearly trampling bivy on a travel route at night after smelling human.
- Hypothermia risk when wet far from heat; learned dry pockets (thick pine canopy, south side of trees), pitch for fire start, hottest-burning wood.
- Mantra each scare: earn this confidence one more time.
Those hunts changed who he was, how he thought, how he carried himself. Confidence transferred. Alaska with Roy about 30 trips: Dall sheep, brown bears, moose, caribou, deer. Skills stacked over years; not overnight leaps from Everyman day hunts. Cam quote block: find something hard that sucks but makes you tough; grab a rock, top of mountain, bring it back down; box checked.
Soft living fear to race ladder to first ultra and 100
Once quit a 10K at mile five at 21, drinking era, no purpose beyond truck/house fantasy. Fatherhood ordered life; poured into backcountry. Early 2000s: wife Tracey, healthy kids, good job; feared softness would erase mountain edge. Started racing: 5K/10K to Salem 7.3 to half to 2003 about 20 miles/day training then Columbia Gorge Marathon 3rd overall. First ultra: McDonald Forest 50K, 5+ hours, wrecked; saw men "doubling" for Western States 100; felt not tough yet. First 100 (detailed in Endure): befriend pain; combine wilderness confidence plus 100-mile proof to "nothing I can't do."
Mike Glover: resilience definition after the rock
Former Green Beret Mike Glover (18 years Army, multiple deployments) after Lift Run Shoot:
- Resilience equals stand or crawl back when knocked down.
- Common capacity; intentionally enter adversity to train it.
- Lift Run Shoot equals simplified adversity; exposes run versus lift versus shoot gaps.
- Many Americans unconditioned for stress yet expect to rise to occasions.
- Uphill with about 80 lb ruck: small goals, breath to breath, manage heart rate; "You're always fighting uphill."
- Accept trauma as non-unique; harness it.
- Resilience starts in head, body, spirit.
Oscar Wilde quote on artists and those who have suffered. Cam: passion from Latin/Greek roots meaning suffering; if unwilling to suffer for it, not true passion. Addicted to suffering; status quo never enough; every day a new chance to learn and suffer.
Roy mindset and Alaska skill stacking (detail)
While Cam grew in Oregon wilderness, Roy faced bigger Alaska challenges. Confidence earned by overcoming challenges and sharing in pictures and videos. Eventually Cam traveled to Alaska about 30 times: Dall sheep, giant brown bears, moose, caribou, deer; biggest adventures; intense experiences. Night-and-day different from Everyman day hunts that return home each night. Animals living among wolves and grizzlies. Cannot leap from typical hunts to extreme adventure overnight; develop skills by putting yourself in pain and pressure over and over; miserable hours alone; every year paid off. Confidence bred the question: if I can do this, what else can I do?
Soft-living ladder (detail)
Once signed up for Butte to Butte 10K in Eugene; quit at mile five on Fifth Street at age 21, unhealthy drinking phase, trailer-and-truck expectation, no accountability. Could not finish one more mile; later fatherhood ordered life. Poured into backcountry: stay longer, hunt harder, hurt more; wilderness felt empty of other people; killed regularly; still knew he could get better. Early 2000s ease with Tracey, healthy kids, good job felt too easy after childhood daily suffering; only suffered a few weeks a year; feared soft would not excel in mountains. Edge-protection program: local 5K/10K finishes to Salem 7.3 to half-marathon, all for bow shape. 2003: about 20 miles/day then Columbia Gorge Marathon 3rd overall. Discovered ultras (50 / 100K / 100 / even 200): "crazy awesome" with Roy. Wanted out of comfort zone to build confidence and suffer-ability; hurt in training because hunt hurts. First ultra two years after first marathon: McDonald Forest 50K, 5+ hours, wrecked. Near finish met four guys running back up trail: doubling (62 miles) preparing for Western States 100. Dumbfounded; thought he was tough; not close. First 100 (in Endure): best friends with pain; wilderness confidence plus 100-mile proof to soaring "nothing I can't do."
Glover tactics (detail)
Resilience definition: stand or crawl back when knocked down; common to all. Trauma and adversity are not unique; understand benefits and intentionally enter. Lift Run Shoot equals simplified adversity-building. Starts with action, one step; hard workout or mountain climb makes life better. Expose weaknesses: ten friends invited will nearly all find a deficiency in run or lift or shoot; volunteer vulnerability to become better. Mike himself suffered up Pisgah with weight; cardio gap identified. People insulate from inferiority and hurt; that fails when shit hits the fan. Chosen military suck (Glover) equips for unchosen hits; comfort and complacency historically high; many Americans unconditioned for stress yet expect to rise; they will be overwhelmed. Ruck tactics: small goals; breath to breath; manage heart rate; five breaths break then continue; looking at summit and quitting is the failure mode. Always fighting uphill; accept; harness trauma energy toward something beneficial. Preparedness starts head, body, spirit.
Stick with the Formula (closing motto)
Does not think about tomorrow; thinks about today. To-do list three words: Run. Lift. Shoot. One day at a time; next 24 hours only. Order flexible; frequency daily. Wins, acknowledgment, successes happen through that daily work. Keep doing the right thing every day and you will be more successful (shape unknown at 1 or 5 years; history says better). Hard work always rewarded; results never random. Stick with the formula today. Cannot do more about yesterday; do not spend time planning tomorrow; past written; future untold; write story today; live present tense.
Chapter 1 map: from Goggins morph to daily three-word formula.
| Arc beat | Gist |
|---|---|
| Goggins 50K / gym | When hard, he speeds up; schedule suffering |
| Divorce / bow start | Ache to Roy to Eagle Cap |
| Williamson | Chosen versus unchosen; performance without purpose; onesie |
| Solo wilderness | Ant perspective; earn confidence scare by scare |
| Soft living fear | Ultras as anti-softness program |
| Glover | Resilience equals crawl back; ruck breath-to-breath |
| Formula | Run / Lift / Shoot; present tense |

Find a Way
No easy bowhunt: 2008 sheep tag and Roy's question
There is no such thing as an easy bowhunt; Cam trains for "blood-and-gut epics." 2008 first-ever sheep tag: circled on calendar for months; felt like years of training; heavy self-pressure to be at very top of game. Motivation check: look up past success rates. Elk bow success about 10%. Hunt allowed any sheep; Cam focused on mature ram. ADF&G research 1997-2002: most rams killed by bowhunters in one year equals 4; 2000 equals 1 ram out of 100 tag holders equals 1%. Late season weather can make hunting nearly impossible; last sheep hunt of year means pressured sheep; little pressure pushes them into cliffs / "goat rocks" (Roy's term), inaccessible to man. Best case: handful of bowhunters hold horns out of 100 tags.
Roy asked: what makes you so different from everyone else who drew this tag; why will you be one of two or three who tag out? Only way to combat doubt: effort. Hard work keeps doubt at bay because he knows he is doing all he can; therefore he will capitalize.
Training ramp: Boston Marathon, McDonald Forest 50K, Forest Park Ultra in Portland (about 31 miles, 3,185 ft gain) over about a month. He would end up running a lot longer than 31.
Forest Park Ultra: vandalized ribbons, purpose over place
Ran with Ryne Melcher (Canada, Montrail-Nathan Ultra Running Team) and Hal Koerner (ultra legend, defending Western States 100 champion). Six or seven miles in, following pink flagging on muddy trails, markers indicated dive off ridge; they dropped hard; no ribbon at bottom; course vandalized overnight (ribbons moved). About 1.5 miles wrong elevation drop; about 3-mile scenic detour; about 25 minutes lost in a about-4-hour race. Locals who knew the course fixed markers after them. Self-talk about still winning: Cam now admits he did not buy it; Hal was world-class; Cam was a bowhunter.
Worst part: mental toll, not placing. Ultras like bowhunting: many mental hurdles even without vandals. Extra hurdles hard even for the best. Hal DNF, frustration. Cam ran hard in pouring rain on muddy singletrack to pass people he had been ahead of; fell in muck once sneaking past four runners; more screwed junctions; he and Ryne deciphered course map frantically over first 20K. Felt like adventure race. At 20K aid thought maybe 18 miles in; was 12; about 20 runners already through after he had already passed 20-30. Considered towel like Hal. Then remembered why: not ribbon, buckle, victory, or PR. This was about doing something difficult in order to be ready for that sheep hunt.
Kept running; hell-bent on reeling people in. Mile 18 aid: 10th. Ahead of Ryne out of station. Mile 24 last aid: 4th; one just ahead, two locals farther (likely never off course). Hammered last seven; another vandalized junction; paused in mud for tracks; wrong way onto Portland streets; back up; rejoined Ryne; finished 4th, Ryne 5th. Yes: about 5 extra miles; quit contemplations; wet shoes full of rocks and mud 4+ hours; suffered; pushed through. Knew it would pay off in bow season; would need every bit of strength for sheep.
Nedd Brockmann: 50 marathons, doctor no, Australia yes
Nedd Brockmann: electrician, New South Wales to Sydney; discovered love of running and challenge at 21; saw homelessness; raised money via 50 marathons in 50 days while working full-time. Visited Cam's hometown for Lift Run Shoot. Still in twenties when Cam wrote: ran across Australia; later 1,000 miles on a track in 12.5 days. Origin: not morbidly obese; body symbolic of where life was heading; knew how to train and eat; asked why not use the opportunity. 3K to 100K in about 4 months. Morning after first 100K: pain, sleepless pride, hunger for more. Heard Dean Karnazes (50 marathons / 50 states / 50 days, 2006) and James Lawrence Iron Cowboy (50 Ironmans / 50 days, 2015). "Why can't I do that?" Realization: they are just people who said fuck it. Nedd: fuck it, and work the regular job too.
Job was cutting concrete walls and pulling cable, not desk recovery. Critics shat on dreams. Doctor: physically impossible after four health professionals; Nedd: "I'll call you on day fifty"; did. During streak realized wrong people in life; moved away. Pattern: work 7-3, home, door about 4 p.m., run 26.2, finish 9-11 p.m., sleep, repeat. Fifty straight days. After: belief he could run a lot more in a day without nine-hour work. Next year injured: felt Superman; young and stubborn; ridiculous distances; learned hard; thankful young. Desire grew: inspire more, raise homeless awareness. 2022 Australia crossing: 46 consecutive days about 100K (62 miles)/day; 10,000+ fans at finish; created a movement.
Training logic: intentionally uncomfortable situations so that on day one of fucked-up pain, head is okay; body follows head; overwhelm comes when head lets the whole distance in. No real blueprint: find a way. Thrive on making the decision. Hesitancy existed; set September 1; stuck; imperfect lead-up; get to start date; find a way because it means enough. "When you say you're going to do something, you commit to it."
Derek Wolfe: childhood savagery, practice pay, next play
Retired NFL DE Derek Wolfe: no comfort, peace, or happiness childhood; wanted NFL at 7; teachers asked career; always "I'm going to play in the NFL"; teachers cited rarity; he did it anyway. Cincinnati to Broncos 36th pick; 8 years Broncos including Super Bowl 2016; 2 more with Ravens. Visited Oregon to train and podcast. Worried about running; Cam: "You're carrying the rock." 6'5", 285 lb; killed the rock up the mountain. Size gift alone does not make NFL; many big guys lack ability, mindset, or preparation.
Rough childhood as preparation: parents divorce, never knew father, abusive stepfather to able to go through NFL pain (at least paid for the latter). "Everybody has a purpose. Are you capable of finding something that you love to do?" First woods bow moment for Cam equals that knowing. To play D-line at high level: "you gotta be fucked up. A savage." Two 350-lb guys trying to move you means a different place. Fatherhood made switch-off harder (Cam: gladiator home to loving father). Great coaching: John Fox: practice like you play; get paid to practice; game is for fun. Grind practice, game easy. Players who will not grind practice are not gamers; do not last. NFL: as soon as they get you they try to replace you. Peyton Manning line Wolfe never forgot: get better or worse, never stay the same; if you think same, probably worse; other guy up since 5 grinding while you lie in bed at 8.
Shared desire: around people who grow, reach, evolve. Worst nightmare: hated 9-to-5, clock in/out, live for weekend, garage beers so wife does not see; "you allowed that with complacency." Why Cam started Lift Run Shoot: surround with Derek-class people; guests better than him at pretty much everything; get shine; grow. Wolfe loves that Cam always goes as hard as he can; not afraid to fail; found something he loves and chased; inspirational; anybody can find and chase. Too many afraid of failure. "What if you do fail? Then try again, motherfucker. Go!" Cam: pour yourself in, no failure, only learning, readjusting, recalculating; keep going.
Wolfe math: thousands of pass plays in ten years; 36 sacks. "I failed a lot. But that didn't deter me. Next play." Learn and adjust tactics; go hard and good things happen. Putting it out there without doing anything: probably not. Putting it out there and never wavering: days of "fuck this" are natural; tell the little voice to fuck off; before feet hit ground: "I'm going to win today" (maybe not; keep trying; eventually works).
Birthday ram: Pioneer Peak, October 2, 2008
Age 41, edge of Pioneer Peak 6,398 ft, Chugach Mountains, towers over Knik River, about 9 miles south of Palmer, about 6 miles outside Anchorage municipality; Matanuska-Susitna landmark; Dall sheep target. Guide beside him: first guided hunt in 15 Alaska trips (prior Sitka blacktail, black bears, caribou, moose were DIY with Roy). Nonresident sheep require guide; guide equals high school friend Roy Roth, past year as state assistant guide under contracting registered guide-outfitter; can personally guide Cam. Dream circumstance: share first Dall with Big Roy; adventure longed for 20 years. Nobody Cam respects more in mountains. Crampons plus ice ax mandatory in hardcore weather. Roy in rare company: 6 bow Dall rams then (9 before 2015 fall/death). Passion since young men; different in many ways, same in goal orientation and eyes on prize when hope seems lost.
Day before opener: four hours quad-burning, calf-thrashing, devil's-club hiking to mid-mountain bench camp; 50-lb pack off; spots ewes and lambs miles away; closer half-curl ram; pumped for daybreak. Opener: another four hours to summit camp; top-of-world feeling; city lights and highway headlights equal false security; if trouble on mountain, valley cannot help; Alaska sheep country unforgiving regardless of view.
Jordan quote Cam inserts: anything can happen if willing to put in the work and remain open to possibility; dreams realized by effort, determination, passion, staying connected to sense of who you are.
Sees Dall like a king with curled-horn crown; approaches mindful of ledges (one slip can kill); down incline, up another peak; legs ache, not tired; decade of miles paying off; eases to bow range. 23-yard chip shot; tries to sneak arrow over rock into vitals; almost inaudible tick; arrow catches stone, hits low, cuts leg. Confidence maybe too high. Dream animal close; bad hit; sick. Goal is perfection worked toward every day; then fails miserably. Sits lonely ridge; picks up cut winter-coat hair; watches through binos; doubts: sacrifice more; ill-prepared for crunch; focus waned because gimme; forgot "pick a spot" (key aiming step). Catalogs cost: hours shooting, miles running, logistics, travel, time from wife and kids, money, humping mountain, snow, Spartan camp, extreme conditions. Photo caption later: near top of Pioneer Peak on 41st birthday after kill; sweet success; near where Roy fell 2015. Never a better chance; 23-yard broadside looking downhill with all the time; expects infallibility here. Despondency does not kill resolve: successful bowhunting equals overcoming obstacles; lip bloodied; bone up for tough blood-trail; owe the animal; respecting life equals most important part of hunter's creed. Roy silent; same page.
Blood in powder snow and on rocks. Break. Unravel trail; sneak; finish 25 yards; dies at edge of 400-500 ft sheer drop; hustle down snow-covered ice. Grabs horns; more life left; bucks and kicks; slumps and slides; going over the edge; maybe Cam with him; holds; one false move from death; lifetime dream in hands; not letting go; pictures loved ones as maybe last thoughts; holding about 250-lb wild beast; about 1 minute feels long; remains steadfast. Cold breeze; wedges ground-side horn in rock crack; body weight anchors; pack off one-handed; nylon cord; pseudo-lasso hind leg; yards body onto small ledge; does not know how; does it. It's all determination.
Roy arrives: how feel? "Awesome. Not textbook, but he's lying here. Killed him with my bow." Blue-collar guy never thought sheep in cards; upper-crust hunt; Roy made possible. Roy: could have found easier spot; rock will fall off any second. Cam: about 500-ft vertical at least. Nervous laughter; Chili's wish; cherish moment; work ahead. Turned 41 today; never felt more alive.
Roy's pocket lesson; 40% no-show; Birthday Ram close
Haul-out eve: Cam asks how Roy constantly finds bow success. Roy: wishes there were one do-this checklist; like other hunting, finds pockets where others will not be; last season pushes rams inaccessible; figure how pockets work; go the extra mile; weather ugly in hours; prepared for bad weather and tougher climb out; find lone ram; exploit opportunities; make it work; every time: "This is impossible"; keep working. Great things: remain determined; keep searching and moving; opportunity comes; move fast. Must be there; about 40% of tag holders never show; mountains dangerous and daunting; easy to think "what did I get into." Key: never stop. "I'm proud of you. Tough one. Not a lot of people do it." Cam grateful; first bow ram; mountain lessons; less than zero to sweetest reward; modest life; dreams can come true; October 2 Birthday Ram. Always keep working hard; greater sacrifice, greater reward. Louis L'Amour (Education of a Wandering Man): great book begins with an idea; great life with a determination; his life steady progression, never dull, often exciting, often hungry, tired, lonely, always learning; decided (or nature decided) he would be a teller of stories.

Be Better on the Tenth Day (closing motto)
Reason you are alone putting in work with seemingly no reward and nobody watching. Determination is not a desire; it is a destination: place you plan to reach; invitation you cannot refuse; journey you have to take. Start with goal; maybe aspiration; maybe dream too good (Dall). Cam: proof no dream too big. Sometimes after hard work and long prep you appear to fail at the moment of success; sometimes kneeling on edge of failure; sometimes literally grab the bull by the horns. What is holding you back? Dreams deliberately difficult; success rate incredibly low; odds not in favor; Roy: keep working. Does not like accepting failure; stacks odds: 10K to marathon to ultra. Prepared plus easy shot on dream Dall plus fucked it up. Preparation is the assortment of tools you carry; determination is the attitude you bring with those tools. Prep yields excitement of day one; determination keeps you there day ten, beat down, mentally fatigued, ready to go home. Goal: actually be better on the tenth day (acclimated, know surroundings, hungrier than ever). Lombardi: price of success equals hard work plus dedication to job at hand plus determination that win or lose you applied the best of yourself. Begin hard work; continue dedication; finish determination. Determination lets you know win or lose you did the best you can.
Chapter 2 map: odds, vandalized race, outliers, cliff finish; day-ten standard.
| Person | Determination exhibit |
|---|---|
| Cam (Forest Park) | About 5 extra miles, 4th place, purpose equals sheep readiness |
| Nedd Brockmann | 50 marathons plus job; AU crossing; ignore "impossible" |
| Derek Wolfe | 36 sacks / thousands of plays; practice over game |
| Roy Roth | Extra mile in goat rocks; pockets others skip |
| Cam (Pioneer Peak) | Bad hit to blood trail to hold ram on ledge |
Make a Good Shot
Crunch time and the daily bow
Crunch time: bowhunter on target; game-winning basketball shot; putt for victory; sprint to finish. All work, time, and resources collapse to one point. Cam's claim for 35 years of archery success: consistent practice until shooting is as natural as breath. Daily dedication: weight vest or none; pack or none; sun, rain, snow; coat, no shirt, shorts, pants, bathrobe, one sock. Focus on process and perfect it. Best hunter in world-class shape still fails without the crunch-time shot.
Cannot fully simulate true sporting intensity; he invents pressure in practice. Example: shooting through his truck window so the shot must be clean under awkward geometry. Simple focus: eliminate distractions; put the arrow where it must go in the heat. The chapter's thesis is not "be talented at aiming." It is: make focus a daily job so that when the animal or the ribbon or the tournament clock arrives, the body already knows the picture Nicklaus described.
Cabela's ribbon (2011) and pressure reps
2011 new Cabela's in Springfield, Oregon. Crowd about 2,000 plus TV crews; then in-store seminar. Chip shot by distance; still easy to blow under adrenaline. Practiced for weeks in the house: target rooms away; doors, walls, lights; wife's computer and family photo near line of fire; more pressure at home than at the ceremony. At the event: joking "don't screw up"; cameras; fear of becoming "that guy who missed." Made the shot. Training type that helps focus: not mandatory for every bowhunter; necessary if you want crunch-time success and undeniable mastery.
Sports focus foils he offers:
- Golf / Tiger's Eyes: hands as blinders on putt; ball lifeless, cup a hole; still brutal nerves
- Football / baseball: mostly reaction to opponents
- Basketball: most players prefer flow offense game-winner over two free throws, one second left, down one (you, ball, rim)
- Bull elk: rage, snot, about 800 lb wildness; draw, pick a spot, one arrow to stop the heart; life and death, not a game
Real admiration, he argues, belongs as much to the local pro-shop guy with a handful of bow bulls as to mainstream stars. Learning bowhunt: time plus supreme focus; wilderness bull flashing timber can crumble a year of prep; pull back, fail to aim, shoot anyway: buck fever (also rifle: jack shells without firing). Adrenaline, costs, expectations, lifetime dream.
His focus target: perfect shot; block everything; claims heart rate steady after 30+ years and high-pressure reps (bear jaw-popping, Africa lion, Cape buffalo, ribbon). Can shoot 10 arrows and kill 10 animals in a season (his framing of consistency under pressure). The point of the claim is not scoreboard bragging; it is that focus under adrenaline is a trained skill, not a personality trait you either have or lack.
Levi Morgan: GOAT focus and the 30-yard absolute
World champion archer Levi Morgan (self-described Carolina redneck who loves to shoot): best focus Cam has seen; "best to ever do it" in Cam's view. Lift Run Shoot visit: intimidating even after hosting runners, fighters, hunters.
Origin: Rosman, North Carolina mountains; hunting, fishing, sports. Dad bowhunter in local tournaments mostly for practice. Levi about 5 started going; soon won everything; dad quit competing to coach. Parents sacrificed for amateur ranks; no means, no pro template. High school: quit archery for sports and girls; after graduation hunger returned; turned down college scholarships; mason work 60 hours/week (dad rock mason) to fund dream: be best who ever lived.
2006 rookie pro year: no sponsors, no free gear; never top five; struggled; still Rookie of the Year; never won a major. Always first out of finals by "one little thing." Offseason: log every spare second; notes on targets, lighting, lanes, sun/rain/shade, terrain; find tendencies and weaknesses; fix while keeping strengths. Next season opener 2007: missed top-five cut; all-time low; spent every dime; nearly walked away; one last event after talking to people who matter; set all-time high score 462. Next 15 years: GOAT path Cam cites: 16 Shooter of the Year awards, 16 world championships, 60+ national titles.
Range day: Happy Gilmore vs Shooter McGavin joke. Tournament ranges: no rangefinder; judge yardage to the yard; Levi looks and knows. Weather, sun in sight window, terrain all in play. Focus on every arrow every time sets him apart.
Secret not only gift: art of great shot plus judge plus decisions. Childhood: bedded buck target and bag in front yard; dad stuffed chicken mash with clothing-plant rags; 30 yards; shot all day. Still finds 30 as his absolute in any situation. That absolute is not magic distance; it is the distance he has shot so many times that the picture is automatic.
Tournament versus hunting (Levi):
- Final moment pressure similar
- Tournament: controlled clock; target not looking; time to pick spot, fix footing, prepare
- Hunting: unpredictable; buck stands, looks; maybe 8 seconds; body screams hurry (where many fail)
- Cannot fully replicate heart-rate stakes (animal of lifetime or world championship)
- Learn most when failing / cannot win: what to do differently next time
- Panic tells: pin not sitting still; must execute through nerves on giant bull with about 5 seconds or opportunity gone
Nickname early 20s: Manimal (custom quiver from fellow archer): tunnel vision; attack opportunity; expected to be there; never guarding second/third; only winning. Dad as mental coach. Talented people crushed without mental strength: "You own that." Cam's takeaway for readers: logging weaknesses is focus work. Owning the mental key is focus work. Treating 30 yards as absolute because of reps is focus work. Mystique is optional; notebooks are not.
Fear wrecks focus; control or be controlled
Focus often breaks from fear: failure, falling behind, or being mauled. Conquer fear on the path from beginner to veteran. Formative night: Jim Hodson seminar at Bow Rack (Eugene); slides Oregon to Kodiak; Cam awestruck; underestimated how tough the road. First bow year: felt utterly harmless with stick and string; nearly three weeks daily; 18 straight days to first spike (links Ch1). From Backcountry Bowhunting: learn to control your fear or your fear will control you. Popular chapter because men rarely admit dark/animal fear; he admitted early solo fear as normal.
Fear as defense: adrenaline dose; weak mental game shakes and panics. Deep wilderness strips home, family, friends, bank account, health illusions. Anticipate and understand fears to adjust (Levi parallel); then more lethal. The claim is operational: name the fear before the stalk so it does not own the shot.
Gym story: guy with Cam's old bow almost got a bull at 35 yards bugling; shook too hard to shoot. Cam: normal at start; that is the practiced moment: stay in control and execute. Pressure remains even after hundreds of hunts. Buck fever is not shame in this framing; it is untrained focus under adrenaline.
2005 first expensive Colorado hunt with Eastmans' Bowhunting Journal: cost ended nearer $12,000 for a good bull (bigger bull, more pay); Gordon Eastman film pioneer pressure. Next year Mike Eastman filming: respect legend, do not let him down. Money and camera are focus loaders; they do not replace daily shooting, but they raise the cost of a lost pin.
Yardage math habit: animal 70 yd unaware = maybe 80% perfect; 69 yd → 82%; walk it in; weather and wind; control what you can. Better shape → clearer crunch-time decisions; tired → lost focus and shortcuts. Claim: if never tired, never losing focus; predator mindset after years; animal is prey. Cam line: focused attention infinitely more valuable than an idle mind.
Fred Bear, Huberman's cone, ice, Sally's balloon
Fred Bear (1902-88): "Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow." Early household-name bowhunter; Cam's dad bought Saxton Pope Hunting with the Bow and Arrow (1923) with Bear intro; still has films. Lift Run Shoot joy: first-time shooters. Bear also returns in Ch4 on practicing during a hunt so the first arrow is not the worst of the week.
Andrew Huberman (podcaster; Stanford neurobiology/ophthalmology associate professor) on first hit: satisfying multi-step process; did not know compound needs ongoing tension; sight; mind to narrow cone of attention; stillness, decision, ballistic movement; arrow leaves; hard to describe; kinesthetic. Guns enjoyable but less connected to mechanics; loved feet/forearm/back, breath, adjustments; contrast stillness and motion. Cam: calm, relaxed, precise at full draw; then beautiful explosion; long shots: watch arc; balloon pop as feedback. Huberman: obsessed with elastic time perception; narrow cone feels like slow motion before release.
Cam links to distraction age: phone-universe; everyone thinks they have ADHD; bow demands tunnel vision. Cold tub: cannot think of anything else; archery and running similarly monopolize attention. Ask: do you have something requiring tunnel-vision focus, and how often? Healthy to have one good focus object. Undeniable people do the narrow cone; also need big-picture focus (prologue's twenty-mile world expanding). Post-high-school: no focus or purpose; bowhunting defined him; average week/drink weekends → laser on bow changed him. "Bowhunting is the key to everything."
Source stub friendship note: Huberman became dear friend; faith-in-God podcast episode "blew up"; grateful for foreword. Treat Huberman's archery description as lived phenomenology plus his neuroscience language, not as a peer-reviewed study of bowhunting skill transfer.
Sally McRae (pro trail runner; fuller story later): balloon work forced phone-off technique obsession (elbow, string to toe tip); peaceful because cannot attend to anything else; laser focus why Cam is elite hunter in her view; wisdom/patience/focus underrated versus "strong and perseverance." Comparison is thief of joy (cliché but real): struggle → off phone, plan steps; looking left/right = distraction, thief of goal, bitterness. Pause: focus on pain and others' stuff, or on where you want to go? Goal is the balloon; distractions will not pop it; hard distance required perfect focus; she did it.
Long-haul focus made up for lack of talent. What you focus on becomes reality. Dream: goal you can laser on; never waver. That last line is the chapter's close before the motto section: focus is not a morning mood; it is non-wavering attention on a chosen goal.
Chapter 3 map: pressure reps, Levi's absolute, fear, narrow cone.
| Person / event | Focus lesson |
|---|---|
| Cam daily shoot | Any clothes, any weather; process over mood |
| Cabela's 2011 | Public chip shot after home obstacle practice |
| Levi Morgan | Log weak scenarios; own mental key; 30-yd absolute |
| Jim Hodson spark | Seminar desire before knowing the cost |
| Huberman | Narrow cone; stillness then ballistic release |
| Sally McRae | Balloon = goal; distraction steals the path |
| Fred Bear | Bow clears a troubled mind; practice keeps first shot sharp |
Build on Today (closing motto)
All you need: shitty bow; old sneakers; dusty weights; no-name shirt; faded stained cap. Not equipment: exercise and effort; starting; starting again; day after day. All you need: an hour, half hour, lunch break, break from texts/Instagram/Netflix; 30 minutes before dawn or after dusk; 1/24 of a day; 5 hours a week. Spark; yearning; goal outdoors; desire different from yesterday; chance to build on today; target for tomorrow; mission to start; determination to finish; belief you can find some success. Cam: mountain and rock; summit and heavy stone; one word on the rock: "Poser" (reminder some are unimpressed; he is unimpressed with himself). Needs stories of others finding fuel and overcoming odds; those push him at lowest on a hunt; reminders everyone can overcome.
The motto section from the short fragment is not a soft epilogue. It is the practical bridge from focus-as-archery to focus-as-life: start with what you have; protect a small daily block; keep a humbling cue; borrow fuel from other people's proof when your own hunt is dark.
2) Keep a weakness log for two weeks (light, weather, footing, hurry).
3) Protect one daily narrow-cone block phone-off (bow, run, cold, craft).
4) Write the fear that would own the shot if unnamed; rehearse the first action after it shows up.
Get Up and Go
Lift Run Shoot, every day (Rogan)
First time on The Joe Rogan Experience, Cam introduced his daily routine. Shirt said it: Lift Run Shoot. Rogan surprised: Sundays off? Nothing? "Every day." Rogan laughs that he likes days off; Cam would like them too, "but I can't do it."
Constant theme of undeniable people: consistent hard work and effort when performing. Not only sport: business, leadership, relationships, anything. Through highs and lows, one thing must remain constant: work. Without consistent effort, the whole ship sinks.
Every outlier he has run and shot with toils daily. Common thread is not rare genetics alone (some are blessed): Consistency will set you apart.
Growing up: little confidence, little direction, little peer support. Bowhunting success feeling changed everything; harder work → more success → present path. Not amazing athlete; not best shot; many better hunters early; refused to stop; daily grind; never satisfied. Over 30 years grinding: talent is not the explanation he accepts; grinding is.
Nick Bare: Go One More
Nick Bare: US Army veteran; strong, fast, endurance; founder/CEO Bare Performance Nutrition (BPN), multimillion-dollar company; hosted in Cam's hometown for Lift Run Shoot.
Kid in small-town central Pennsylvania: average athlete, student, social life by his account. Loved baseball; pro dream faded. Severe childhood eating disorder nearly killed him; rebuilt healthy relationship with food; sparked fitness, training, nutrition; college nutrition; army; created BPN before graduating; documented journey as owner and athlete; decade-plus community for full potential.
Excelled at Cam's 20-mile run. After military: publicly "I will never run a day in my life again"; missed it; returned → marathons, triathlons, 100-mile races. Early quit moment like Cam's 10K: halfway into 18-mile marathon training run, cold wet downtown Austin 2018; voices asking why; stopped to walk home; inner call that quitting here means quitting elsewhere; forced finish; at 18 kept going one more mile; wrote "One More" on hat bill → slogan Go One More (Keep Hammering parallel for many athletes).
BPN: not overnight; compounding consistency of authentic brand, community, products; about 11 years. Coach Jeff Cunningham: better to be consistently good than occasionally great. Daily miles in heat/cold/rain/sun beat the person who snoozes easy runs then occasionally blasts a fast mile or signs a marathon and blows up.
Courtney Dauwalter: grains of sand and the pain cave
Courtney Dauwalter: generally regarded GOAT of women's mountain/trail ultra; Cam trains hard hoping to halfway keep up on shared mountain runs. Joy watching her succeed.
Love of running: fifth/sixth grade mile in gym; liked the feeling; soccer before, favorite part was running the field. Seventh grade cross-country: full control vs team sports; push to finish; recharge for brain and body; social miles with best friends (still close from age 13). High school solo runs: compose English paper in head, scribble at home. Coaches taught hard work; teammates mattered most.
Not a childhood ultra dreamer; Minnesota kid found even marathons insane. Mid-20s Twin Cities Marathon (Minneapolis to Saint Paul capitol); then bigger challenges outside workday life. Tough Mudder: high platform into freezing lake; electric wires; giggling at absurdity. Buddy's neighborhood 50K San Antonio (teaching job); age 26, 2011; daily ~1 hour before work, weekends up to 2; no formal plan; loved it. Dirt trails vs beeping road watches; jelly beans; opened ultra world. Next: 50-mile Steamboat Springs mountains; terrible weather; people having fun; hooked. First 100-miler 2012: quit at 60 miles (pain); had not yet found famous "pain cave"; later: that pain was normal; lacked mental tools then. Bounce-back matters: derail after first DNF and the GOAT path never starts.
Advice for new runners: hard at first; tiny consistent blocks / grains of sand; want five miles → start around the block; go tiny, be consistent; pile appears when you look back; no daily visible gain. Hard even for her; okay if hard; finish moves you positive. Hardest burst often: shoes on, walk out the door.
Later in chapter: how she still improves: "sharpening the dull blades"; build little at a time; grow endurance to push harder; add little bits to the fire daily without only adding volume (over edge → breakdown); sign up for hard stuff and learn.
Rich Froning: get up and go (no balance at the top)
Honor: days with CrossFit legend Rich Froning Jr. Cam not big CrossFit guy; big icon guy. Rich: "Fittest Man in History" tag after four straight individual CrossFit Games titles 2011-2014; retired individuals at 27; captain of six Affiliate Cup team wins. Cam watched like he watched Lance Armstrong without being a cyclist.
Kobe Bryant epigraph in source: The Mamba Mentality: saw you come in; doesn't matter how hard you work; I'm willing to work harder.
What made Rich rise and stay: perfect storm; genetics matter (can outrun a little, not completely); good parents; faith huge; sports; mentors/coaches. Among genetic freaks: mental side; early to treat CrossFit as sport; play games with competitors; push them more than they wanted. High school baseball: team ran more than track/XC; coach mental toughness; CrossFit before cool; mental conditioning foundation. Hate losing; minimize losses outside wheelhouse; throttle events he could own; play the big game one event at a time. Buddy Jason wrote on wall "What's Rich doing?" and tried to outwork the imagined load.
Cam/Rich banter: run past warm lit houses; competitive contempt as fuel (source language is harsh; capture as their stated mindset, not advice to insult neighbors). Obsession: 10 p.m. "didn't do enough" → another 5K or garage session; stepped away from individuals when kids needed front center; all-consumed grinding hurt relationships. Day after winning Games: train again; family vacation still 2-3 sessions/day. "Isn't that the price of greatness?" "It really is." Balance talk: "There's no balance. Not to be the best." Cam: you can be average and balanced.
How: every day a grind; wake up not feeling it; "just get up and go"; once going, good. Logging-town childhood: heads down, same hard work tomorrow; Cam could not be only work-and-home; hunting became the other pole. Understands outworking others even without claiming Kobe-level greatness; 30+ years daily; grinding, not talent narrative.
Rogan on haters, Fred Bear on hunt practice, good vs great
Years at Springfield Utility Board full-time while building hunting life. Rogan pushed quitting to focus on hunting; noted many live dull drone then TV/eat; attack risk-takers from keyboards because ambition makes them uncomfortable. Cam line in source: "Guess what? They still don't care. Work harder." Joe jokes he skips his own hate-reads but reads Cam's; inadequacy and unlived life; starting "beast" mode at 55 after decades dull is a long road; even losing pounds can be Herculean.
Cam hears for years: keep running → knee replacements by 40; body breaks. His belief: body adapts to load; consecutive years show change; fired-up week fades; punch the time clock and life/body/outlook change. Why consistent shooting too? Fred Bear: practice during a hunt (lunch, group talk), not only when stalking; first shot of a hunt matters; 3-4 days without shooting can make first arrow the worst; stay sharp; get bad shots out in practice.
Early podcast guest fatigue: always same answer. "My secret? Work hard. That's it. End of interview." Own podcast guests vary; core message does not. Ain't rocket surgery: consistent effort; work, sweat, hurt, win; every day; no exceptions; lift, mountain run, bow for bowhunting challenge.
Good is enemy of great: time with people great at hunting, running, endurance, lifting, training, writing. Feels not great at anything; best day good at one or two; cannot be satisfied with good because greats never are. Discipline visible to him as running; work in one domain spills. Likely never reaches dream level; most do not; never stop trying.
Courtney again: sharpen dull blades; little bits on the fire; hard races as classrooms.
Chapter 4 map: daily triad, One More, sand pile, get-up-and-go.
| Person | Consistency move | Proof point |
|---|---|---|
| Cam | Lift Run Shoot daily | 30+ years; utility job + hunting life |
| Nick Bare | Go One More; plan revise | 3:24 → 2:48; BPN ~11 years |
| Jeff Cunningham | Consistently good > occasionally great | Coach line Nick quotes |
| Courtney | Grains of sand; dull blades | 50K → 50 → 100; pain cave tools |
| Rich Froning | Get up and go; no balance at peak | 4x Games; later family tradeoff |
| Fred Bear | Practice on the hunt | First arrow not the worst |
| Rogan (foil) | Likes days off; pushes Cam to quit day job | Contrast + ambition critique of haters |
Love the Grind (closing motto)
Source motto fragment defines grind three ways, then lands the command:
- As verb: crush and pulverize by friction; shape and sharpen by attrition; rub and reduce by repetition; wear down wants and will; grate and gnash; get going day after day and night after night; keep going; go far, then farther; stop guessing how far you will go.
- As adjective: names difficulty, struggle, never-ending toil, long-standing routine, drudgery, effort.
- As noun / attitude: one word for countless mountain steps; picture of pain and persistence; daily goal; weekly routine; yearly regime; ache and sweat; hard work and exhaustion; lifestyle of longing for more.
Close of fragment: if you want to be undeniable, grind it out; put in the work; love the grind. Period.
That motto sits on top of the chapter's lived examples. Courtney's "little bits to the fire" is grind as sand pile. Nick's hat bill is grind as one more mile after the quit voice. Rich's "get up and go" is grind as morning refusal. Bear's lunch-break practice is grind as keeping the first arrow sharp. Cam's no-Sunday-off Lift Run Shoot is grind as schedule. Rogan's day-off preference is the foil that makes the rule audible. Consistency is not a poster; it is shoes on, garage at 10 p.m. when obsession costs, or knowing when family must move front center (Rich). It is revising the marathon plan after 3:24. It is Cam's personal rule, stated without requiring every reader to copy the extreme volume.
Pope's epigraph for the chapter (infinite patience and practice; earn the right to take life by constant shooting) pairs with Bear's hunt-practice rule: consistency is ethical readiness in Cam's frame, not only athletic volume.
2) When you want to quit mid-session, add one small "One More" (one mile, one set, one end).
3) Track "consistently good" days vs "occasionally great" spikes for a month.
4) Pick one dull blade and sharpen it with tiny adds; schedule one hard test as classroom.
Just Watch What Happens
Bowhunting as humility school; discipline as self-control
Bowhunting humbles: hike any mountain, weather any storm, animals hunted daily and dialed in; get into the red zone; patient and quiet; alone; sharp stick; one perfect shot; stay calm facing majestic animals. Do not start unless you can deal with failure. Practice and prep matter; the trait to embrace for hunting and life is discipline.
This chapter's cut of discipline is not the consistency/determination already covered. It is self-control: the big things, not only "little details." You cannot McDonald's-and-booze your way to greatness. Many outliers Cam interviews share alcohol/addiction battles. He has not drunk in decades; daily load makes alcohol a goal-killer. Fork-in-the-road language: Frost's two roads; Maxwell in Failing Forward: every major difficulty is a fork toward breakdown or breakthrough. Undeniable move: deny yourself something.
Early Cam: at 17, mom, stepdad, brothers, sister move to Arizona; he stays in Oregon; couches, girlfriends, trailer parks, SOU dorm trying college football, apartment with three guys; alcohol disasters; low self-esteem, ambitions, expectations; blackouts; wake ashamed; drink after work to mask nowhere life. Lowest moment (also in Endure): crash and total truck; tow away; two paths: small roadside trailer, or the mountains. Mantra then: same shit, different day. The chapter's title promise ("just watch what happens") only activates after the denied thing stays denied long enough for compounding to become visible.
- Little things myth. Cam rejects "devil in the details" as the main lever; big sabotage choices (food, alcohol) sink the ship first.
- Outlier pattern. Breakthrough stories he collects almost always include a refused substance or habit.
- Societal acceptance. Alcohol is legal and social; he still calls it a powerful drug that walked him backward on fitness, discipline, hunting, and athletics.
Natalie Eva Marie: daily sobriety as actionable steps
Natalie Eva Marie: actress, fashion designer, model; best known as WWE pro wrestler; later ultramarathoner and hunter; credits Cam for running/ultra entry; Mount Pisgah run ("savage… no fucking joke").
Concord, California: sports with brothers; high school soccer focus; senior-year ankle ligaments; hangs cleats then returns junior college All-American; Arizona State tryout abandoned by self-doubt ("Am I good enough?"); Cal State Fullerton makes team but NCAA five-year clock expires eligibility. Deflated → self-destructive drinking ("beast… not pretty"); totals car drunk (unlike Cam's walk-away: broken nose, hematoma); sober at 23 with brother's help; AA; overconfident exit from sponsor ("that bitch" inner voice still hunting her); relapse nine months later. Dating fitness coach Jonathan Coyle (now husband): ultimatum: sober and work the program or the relationship ends. Old Natalie would walk; new Natalie hears calm-to-her-storm, anchor who will not take her shit. Near 10 years sobriety at telling. Why relapse is common: demons are daily; must show up; she loves watching Cam/Goggins get after it because it models daily reprieve. Line: sometimes go through agony and mess to enjoy beauty. Cam: hard to focus only on what is in front; stay course year after year; both should have died drunk-driving; beat odds; now share content that may hit others.
Taylor Spike: sobriety, Donovan, running through grief
Younger half brother Taylor (mom remarried Greg → Taylor and Megan; dad remarried Kandi → Justin; Cam refuses "half" as category). 10-year gap; Cam admits worst big-brother stretch at SOU; hunting memories: pull from school at 12 for bedded buck; after second deer, guts himself, nearly slices thumb (Cam finishes). By 30s: back surgeries, overweight, beer and prescription drugs. At 34, chooses full sobriety. "Life always catches up." 2016: 7 a.m. dentist; sees crash on news ("dumb kids"); wife Pamela calls sobbing; stepson Donovan (entered life ~age 10, bumps then straightened out), 21, dead in that pickup crash.
Family heartbroken and lost. Rather than cave, Taylor launches into recovery encouragement and running: different way to process pain instead of escape it; obstacles stop being excuses. First races: signs 8K without knowing distance; almost paces Cam Western States (surgery blocks); 25K; Frozen Trail 50K Mount Pisgah in rain slick, wool socks, Gatorade ("almost died"). Claims first two miles with Donovan felt closer to dying than later 100/ 200-milers. Watching Cam crush early races: "he's a man, I'm a man"; toughen and stick. Took ~10 years to feel like a runner; loved mountains more than race results until Tahoe 200, where he aimed to succeed; first two years place third (Courtney Dauwalter ahead once). Cannot sit bored; old home = drink and TV; now home without miles feels lazy. Spreads Donovan's ashes at meaningful race moments. Same era: forced move, lost 20-year job; "really good reasons" to drink; chooses engulf in farther/faster instead. Watching Pamela sleep with the urn: do better, be best version. Cam: numbing does not change the pain; mountain discipline buys thinking time. Taylor's mission: inspire, smile, keep the few good choices compounding for family and strangers.
Jelly Roll: jail birthdays to windshield bigger than rearview
Jelly Roll (TN singer-songwriter-rapper): "Save Me" authenticity hit Cam hard before full bio known; 2023 household name; Rogan visit; Cam: jail years to Grammy-nominated country, love and graciousness rare in his experience. Spent 15th through 20th birthdays incarcerated; no cake, no happy birthday from guards; ~six weeks of high school; knew he got a woman pregnant; May 22, 2008 guard: you had a kid today, walks away; decides quit selling drugs; signs up for education; GED from violent offender gang unit. Assumed a guy like him dies in prison; kept working music and life; discovers singing voice beyond rap. CMT awards including Breakthrough Male Video for "Son of a Sinner"; acceptance: "They let a loser win tonight." Cam identifies with the sinner song (prayer when things fuck up); Rogan: every human; rare diamond from that pressure. Dinner before Grand Ole Opry with Cam's son and fiancee; family gracious; Nelly also performing; next day Jelly brings Endure to sign, wants it beside gold/platinum ("used to want records on the wall"). Rogan: terrible hand → other end → makes you want to be better. Award exhortation Cam amens: 39-year-old New Artist; keep going; success on other side; everything gonna be okay; windshield bigger than rearview for a reason; front more important than behind.
Ken Rideout: every day means every day; light in the tunnel
Ken Rideout: New York Times "World's Best Marathoner over 50"; Lift Run Shoot; marathon PR 2:28; "You're dealing with a pro… every day means every day" (hurricane hypothetical included). Spencer Butte ~5 miles / 2,058 ft when Pisgah closed; hard even for him; "felt it everywhere."
Somerville, MA; lower-income dysfunctional home; Framingham State paid by prison-guard work at the penitentiary where brother and stepfather served; boxed and hockey; finance transforms poor kid into London/NY rich man flying Concorde. Money did not make happy; exposed weaknesses always there. Ankle → Percocet 7 tablets/week → 20; mom-and-pop NYC pharmacy no questions; street supply; "very good drug addict" at hiding and functioning; highs/lows; childhood pain plus addiction. Realization: everyone struggles; talk helps; only real exit is deal with it. Sobriety → Ironman (swim = "if I fell off a boat"); training probably still a replacement; tells people not to take his advice blindly; balance works for him. Hawaii Ironman: euphoric arrival, then quits ~3 miles into run; shame ("dirty dog loser"); Teddy Atlas line: harder to quit because it lasts forever; walks toward start in tears; wife: go back next year and fix it; returns 9:39. From 2016 all-in on running: mornings before work → 10 miles/day → 2:30 or better seven times. How to 2:30: "run a lot with purpose." Formula: person who works most typically best; gym muscles and race winners train more; training = therapy + advantage. No days off; free passes used up; hope for addicts in the dark: detox week is hell on earth for ~10 days; "just wean with a couple" is the big lie back to three/four times daily; blindly believe light at tunnel end, like training gains you cannot see yet. Turn weakest/most humiliating part into building block; control reactions not events; windshield line again; tomorrow can be day one. Average guys who refuse average; skills earned not superpowers; gates open, come in.
Chris Williamson, Cam's dad, Bigfoot 200
Fit/disciplined influencers flood Cam's feed (Goggins, Jocko, Rogan…). He asks Chris Williamson: are influential people ever undisciplined? Chris: did success create discipline, or discipline create success? Latter for most. Flukes exist: Chris's own reality-TV, obligation-free status → ~6 weeks to millions of followers and a million-dollar fast-fashion deal; transactional lottery, not scalable. Most win fame through discipline.
UK "lager-lout" culture; club promoter monetizing and living the smash-most-nights life. At 23-24 training matters → dial party. At 27-28: needs time, money, energy, consistency; Friday-afternoon "degenerate" itch resets progress every two weeks like Etch A Sketch. Experiment: sober 6 months; loves extra day each fortnight and compounding; returns briefly; another 6 months; returns 2-3 months; then 1,000 days. Most effective young competitive advantage he argues: mental clarity to stay consistent. Not dependent; wanted more life. Vegas/holiday bonding rites can be outgrown like Power Rangers at eleven.
Cam: not soapbox; been there; alcohol stepped him backward on every cared-about metric; would not be who he is if he kept drinking. Beauty from ashes: father amazing track athlete whose drinking blocked prime potential; later sober ~30 years; dies 62 of cancer despite years without smoke/drink; coaching thousands of high-school kids who still message Cam; dad is who he wanted to make proud. Speculates Olympic gold might have changed the road; impact-as-coach is the life that played out; Cam is the way he is partly because of that story. Loved ones force discipline; discipline can feel devastating; hope on the other side.
Bigfoot 200 (2016), Cascades WA: actually 205 miles; about 42,000 ft gain; about 86,000 ft elevation change. Why sign up after hard 100s? Brain wants new tests. Taylor agrees to night pace. Hot ~90°F; too fast early; dehydrated on Mount Saint Helens sun with thin water plan ~mile 40 / ~7 hours while others conserve; bonk (fuel/salt crash); nearly a full day to claw back while still moving. 100 miles at ~30 hours, not halfway, smoked. Pitch-black with Taylor. Mile 130 ~midnight rain: cannot contain excitement; lucky to be here; place few reach; still going. Taylor runs mostly nights (~100 of 205); logistics of crew vehicles may be harder than pure miles; Cam inspired watching him soldier after life fire. Frost less-traveled lines close the emotional arc. Last 13 miles "smell the barn"; paces in the sixes after 190-195; finish eighth first 200. The Rock posts on Cam in Under Armour "Blood, Sweat & Respect"; social and awareness lift for the race format. Race pain eases; Donovan / father / Roy pain does not. On Pisgah ache days: you go home later; even a 200 is days not a life sentence; still breathing; try to enjoy the moment. Stick to goals → positive results; sacrifice and dark-night ache; Ken's light at tunnel end.
Chapter 5 map: fork, deny, daily work, chip away.
| Person | Sabotage / fork | Discipline move | Outcome named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cam | Truck crash; trailer life | Mountains; decades sober | Bowhunter/athlete path |
| Natalie | Drunk crash; relapse | Program + Jonathan ultimatum | WWE; ~10 yrs sober |
| Taylor | Beer/pills; Donovan's death | Run through grief | Ultra runner; ashes rites |
| Jelly Roll | Jail teens; drug sales | GED; music grind | CMT / Opry; windshield line |
| Ken Rideout | Percocet empire | Every-day running | 2:28 PR; 2:30 x7 |
| Chris Williamson | Friday reset drinking | 6mo / 6mo / 1000 days sober | Compounded consistency |
| Dad (Cam's) | Athletic drink sabotage | Later sobriety + coaching | Impact on thousands |
What "actionable steps" looks like across the cast
Discipline in this chapter is rarely abstract willpower. Natalie names meetings, workouts, clean eating, and working the sobriety program because Jonathan refused a vague promise. Taylor names shoes on the mountain after the urn night and the lost job. Jelly names GED paperwork inside a gang unit after a guard's one-line birth announcement. Ken names morning miles before finance work and the second Hawaii start line after the shame walk. Chris names thousand-day sobriety as a clarity tool, not a moral trophy. Cam names the mountain run tomorrow when the calendar fog is honest.
The shared mechanic: shrink the time horizon until the next honest action fits in a day, then repeat until the old loop starves. Relapse stories (Natalie leaving AA early; Ken's wean-lie; Chris's brief returns to drinking) are included because the book treats discipline as a renewing choice, not a one-time conversion event. "Just watch what happens" is what outsiders see after insiders have already stacked hundreds of unspectacular days.
Cam's dad closes the moral imagination: athletic talent without discipline becomes a caution; coaching discipline after personal salvage becomes thousands of kids' side of the story. Cam wants to make that man proud. The Bigfoot rain at mile 130 with Taylor is one answer: two brothers still moving through fire toward a barn they can finally smell.
Start Chipping Away (closing motto)
Beat the odds; break the cycle; be different, be better. Everyone has a mountain: name the summit, what you will see on top, which self-inflicted habits and self-sabotage keep you mid-pack. Imagine life if you changed from passive to passionate. Elite talent? Cam has none of the gifted kind; those with tons of talent are generally not running at midnight after hammer days and long plane rides. Congrats to the talented; he accepts scrub status; you will not outwork him. Untapped talent without sacrifice = wasted potential; do not live with that. When you live disciplined, you "deserve" those mountaintops in his moral frame. Standing at the bottom looking up is okay; beginning overwhelms; start chipping day after day. One thing anybody can do: work hard. He does not know next month or this weekend; he knows tomorrow: run that mountain; guarantee. Never too late to begin, become someone new, stop bad habits, start new ones. Yesterday over; tomorrow not guaranteed; today matters; make the most of it.
Discipline under race load (Bigfoot detail pass)
The Bigfoot section is the chapter's physical parable for mental sobriety. Starting too fast on a hot volcano shoulder is the drunk-weekend reset in running clothes: early euphoria, thin plan, public passers, long claw-back while still spending calories. Taylor's night pacing is discipline as companionship logistics, not only hero miles. The mile-130 joy speech only works because they refused the quit that Ken still tastes from Hawaii. Eighth place and a Rock post are optional trophies; the non-optional product is proof that denied sabotage plus daily chip can put an ex-trailer-path kid and a grieving brother in rain at midnight still moving.
Cam's comparison of pains is the ethical center: race ache ends; Donovan's absence, a father's cancer death, Roy's fall do not. Discipline that only chases suffering theater misses the point. Discipline that keeps you usable for family, recovery peers, and one more sober sunrise matches the Natalie/Taylor/Jelly/Ken chorus.
- Frost / Maxwell / Iacocca. Three fork vocabularies, one demand: choose breakthrough track and stay on it when the old track is socially easier.
- Deny yourself. Chapter thesis in four words; alcohol is Cam's primary example, not the only possible denied agent (food binge, pill wean-lie, Friday Etch A Sketch).
- Just watch what happens. Not passive magic: the watch starts after the chip streak is real enough that next month can stay foggy while tomorrow's mountain is guaranteed.
Additional beats worth keeping
Natalie on self-belief after the eligibility wipe: you face yourself every day; belief can take you there or take you out. Her "life beyond wildest dreams" sitting with Cam is framed as program fruit, not fame luck alone. Cam answers with shared improbability: influencing others from near-death drunk paths.
He progresses goal to goal past the 8K mental wall. Sitting home now feels like laziness because the old anesthesia (beer/TV) is gone.
Jelly at dinner/Opry humanizes the award rhetoric: gracious family, open-soul show, autographed book valued beside platinum. Rogan's "makes me want to be a better person" is the social proof Cam wants discipline to generate.
Ken on purpose: demonstrate what average-refusing looks like; commitment, sacrifice, delayed gratification mirror recovery's invisible early weeks. "Tomorrow can be just one day, or day one of the new journey."
Chris on tools that formed you: bonding-over-blackout may be as obsolete as childhood toys for the aims you now hold. Cam refuses pulpit tone while still naming alcohol's backward step on every metric he cares about.
Self-control checklist drawn from the chapter
Cam's discipline chapter can be read as a field checklist rather than a memoir pile:
- Inventory the sabotage. Alcohol, pills, Friday resets, couch numbness after grief, ego quitting when pride is threatened (Ken's Hawaii).
- Name the fork out loud. Trailer vs mountains; relationship vs bottle; van vs cameraman is Ch6, but the muscle is identical.
- Put a human anchor in the path. Jonathan for Natalie; Pamela's grief forcing Taylor upward; Ken's wife sending him back to Hawaii; Taylor beside Cam at night on Bigfoot.
- Replace escape with contact. Miles, meetings, GED class, cold honesty on Rogan about sinner songs.
- Shrink the promise. Tomorrow's mountain; today's meeting; this mile; this thousand-day experiment. Do not require a five-year mood.
- Expect the inner opponent. Natalie's "little voice"; Ken's wean-lie; Cam's old blackout shame. Discipline is arguing with that voice using calendar proof.
- Keep windshield > rearview. Jelly's line becomes Ken's line becomes the reader's line after failure nights.
- Chip when overwhelmed. Motto section: talent optional; outwork mandatory; wasted potential forbidden.
Bowhunting remains the opening metaphor because the red zone punishes impatience the way sobriety punishes "just one." One sharp stick, one chance, animals dialed in: if you arrive sabotaged, the mountain does not care about your potential.
Bet On Yourself
Believe you will succeed vs believe you deserve it
Difference that opens the chapter: believing you will find success ≠ believing you deserve it. San Carlos: untapped drainage; childhood dream after Stevens brothers film (San Carlos Apache Tribe Elk Hunting with Homer, Mark, Tim); elk sizes Oregon small-town kid did not know existed; asks if blessing or retribution; concludes others endured worse; still grateful to be alive in the moment when the deep bugle rises.
When he stopped moving head-down with buried ambitions and looked up, big unrealistic dreams arrived despite no special talent. Sponsorship by a major sports brand was one dream; he hated business of hunting but knew value and wanted to win. By 2000s, chip on shoulder: working harder and hunting better than most, industry slow to see it.
Under Armour, Hoyt, and the poor-kid tag math
SHOT Show 2004, Las Vegas: ~2,200 exhibitors from 64 countries. Surprise: Under Armour launching hunting division (Cam associated UA with NFL/MLB under pads). Booth photo: legendary DT Randy White (14 Cowboys seasons) jacked with bow and Super Bowl ring; Cam tells Eric Crawford the bow lacks a rest, so the ad is inauthentic. Stays in touch; brought on unpaid at first (represent, photo shoot); becomes one of longest-tenured athletes, nearly 17 years. Big brand treating hunting as legitimate (not Nike/Adidas path); meets Kip Fulks, cofounder who takes outdoor division.
Money history: could barely afford elk; years deer-only because elk tags $25 vs deer $10-11; one family car until sister-in-law gift. Oregon public-land bulls nearly every year 1989-2003; first out-of-state elk 2004 Wyoming public 6x7. Obsession aimed at bigger hunts, not paychecks; pay eventually meant "one of the best" signal. 2005 Hoyt Archery deal still current; refuses negotiation theater; asks lifetime; gets evergreen (each year dropped adds a year). Focus never changes even as business blessings arrive.
Michael Waddell: HVAC van or the dream
Michael Waddell: Booger Bottom, Georgia; if it gobbles/quacks/bugles/grunts he has chased it; teen turkey-calling win → guide/film for Realtree; films Chuck Adams, Jim Shockey; invents Realtree Road Trips (Outdoor Channel Sunday must-watch pre-DVR); "it" factor few copy successfully. 2008 cohost Bone Collector; company of same name standing up for hunting culture; beloved ambassador. 2004 UA photo shoot memory: both wondering if they get free shirt boxes. Blue-collar HVAC degree and service van with benefits/Christmas party; family resistance when he quits in 20s to be hunting-show cameraman. Percentage mindset: maybe 15-20% chance in any dream field; even 10% worth the bet because failure returns to the van; chips from 10% → in the door → 40% → here. Fifties: not satisfied, still striving; peace-ish dynamic feels good; ambassadors influencing culture.
Hate from non-gamblers: see the summit not the failed marriage, missed kids, grind; bitter they kept the named van. Waddell less empathy for complainers: energy spent mad at succeeders instead of mirror; will put $100 on blackjack but not $10 on self. "If you can't bet on yourself, who the hell are you gonna bet on?" Cam: if he made it from 24-kid class / mill-and-woods town, and Waddell from Booger Bottom to hunting TV fame, anybody can; believe; tunnel focus; work. Waddell: vision collapses to stay focused and work; mistakes/regrets almost blessings.
Kip Fulks: oppressor to bowhunting brother; social as innovation
Kip Fulks: original UA cofounder with Kevin Plank; quit-to-get outdoor division ("want that or I'm out"); builds hunter boots/performance line; Cam face of outdoor; Kip first hesitant ("we're doing hunting" / "no, badass bowhunter too"). Billboard: Cam in gear, tagline "Athletes Hunt"; fuels harder hammer. Cam tells Kip he should be number-one paid athlete; Kip hard ("corporate douchebag"/"oppressor" on other podcasts); Cam keeps grinding. Credit: early social adopter without company/investors; hunting-industry social not even close over ~10 years; innovator before Instagram/Facebook understood. Pre-social: needed magazine or TV gatekeepers (Waddell path); Cam pain to work with (solo hunter, hates slowdowns). Social godsend: own words/control. Innovation = see what others miss and stick ~10 years before declaring failure. Western market tiny (~5% vs ~95% East/Southeast whitetail); Cam wants love/support anyway; frustration. Loyalty + authenticity eventually opens companies. Arc: ecstatic at free hunt + $10k/year → then units-sold math → family depends on not being stupid about value. Pollard epigraph: learning and innovation hand in hand; arrogance of success is thinking yesterday suffices for tomorrow. Self-promote humbly or no one toots your horn. Later: Kip retires UA; hunts together; with Cam when Roy-death news hits; blood brother. Soft-rich jokes aside: no money growing up; community college → walk-on → Maryland scholarship; 21 years UA; not two-year flip; grind + luck + team. At 32, UA public → net worth ~$50M; answer to how: four jobs; sleep ~1.5 hours; in-out log; ~2.5 hours/day at house including sleep → do not buy; want more → do more → give something up. Now: Big Truck Farm Brewery, Origin, Jocko Fuel, Method & Mindset 12-week class; ego warning after long executive run; earn it daily; loves Cam's outlier spotlight and shared work-ethic commons. Innovators, risk takers, self-believers.
Cam's Bull of a Lifetime (2018) and Aaron Rodgers's ego deaths
Aaron Rodgers (then Packers / later Jets context in book): self-motivated best people; Lift Run Shoot surreal for Cam. Greatest growth tied to ego death: idea of who you are destroyed. Chico, CA; senior yardage record; no D1 offers; Butte Community College with coach Craig Rigsbee (play Saturdays after one good year); freshman 10-1, #2 national JC; Cal Berkeley starter; Heisman 9th; enters 2005 draft; green-room agony as 49ers take Alex Smith #1; Packers take Rodgers 24th. Backup Cal; backup Green Bay three years behind Favre (retire/unretire chaos); fan death threats/bodily-harm talk walking from camp; chips vs own fans. Super Bowl XLV MVP (Feb 6, 2011), Packers 31-25 Steelers. Age 41 in 2024 season, twentieth year; outlasted draft class. Motivation: stack chips; hate losing more than love winning; pride in performance for teammates; rise when lights brightest. Cam cannot imagine couch-critic pressure; Aaron: external < self-pressure. Skinny Pleasant Valley knee-brace kid; thank you adversity.
Imposter stack, Rogan pushback, Put in the Work
Does Cam wake believing in himself? Mostly; still often feels undeserving of opportunities despite earning/suffering. Imposter theme from Endure; not alone. Chris Williamson: success feels fluke; someday someone revokes the life; bullying/lonely childhood demons; fights with "undeniable stack of proof"; Rogan's mountain with layers of paint; each iteration better until evidence crushes the syndrome; also people who want you for you. Cam still sometimes feels the lonely kid never left.
On Rogan: Cam calls Goggins training a blessing he does not deserve; Joe driven nuts by the refrain; names imposter syndrome; hard workers with high standards feel fraud when successful; Joe feels it with more-famous rooms and arenas but does not broadcast it; admires Cam; learned from him. Cam line: if people do not believe in you, shrink and go away, or become undeniable. Mindset: find confidence in the morning, carry up the daily mountain; daily wins, then leave them; refuse laurels; wake: that was yesterday, what's today; failures drive more than highlight reels; destiny brings undeserved-feeling moments like San Carlos. Bugle → bull works up drainage; no call needed; mortal hit; find before dusk; butcher and haul. Destiny/purpose; believes abilities; remains honored/humbled; worldly riches little beside wild valley sunset; thanks God for one more day.
Put in the Work motto: right to be "delusional" with yourself (awesome, incredible); do not tell anyone except maybe Roy Roth. Imposter talk ≠ ignorance of abilities; humbled ≠ humility performance. Young Cam looked up to Fred Bear (d. 1988, age 86); standards evolve; Bear could not shoot/run like Cam now (Cam's claim); decided to redefine the standard; believed then and now; did not even tell wife; print earns honesty right. Will never be Bear / Chuck Adams / Roy Roth; shut hate; hunters compete with egos; must be confident, tough, capable; training serves hunts. Hypothetical critic: anybody with your chances could; Cam: then why has nobody killed five good wild bulls in a year with a bow in history until his claim? Doubt fuels; not performing for doubters; grinding is identity; poser/imposter mindset still got him here; long way to go.
Chapter 6 map: skill, value, innovation, ego death.
| Person | Self-bet | Resistance | Proof point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cam | UA/Hoyt; social; daily film | Industry slow; sponsor control | ~17 yrs UA; 4M+ film; evergreen Hoyt |
| Michael Waddell | Leave HVAC van | Family / odds | Road Trips; Bone Collector |
| Kip Fulks | Quit into outdoor division | Corporate no's to Cam | UA outdoor; later ventures |
| Aaron Rodgers | JC → Cal → NFL wait | Draft 24; Favre years | SB XLV MVP; longevity |
| Chris Williamson | Stack of proof | Imposter fluke fear | Paint-layer mountain |
What betting looks like when you hate the business
Cam repeats that he hates contracts, royalties, and money talk even while he is good with numbers. The chapter's practical lesson is that hating the business does not excuse abandoning value. Early ecstatic scraps ("hunt free + ten grand") are allowed as beginner gratitude; staying there after shoe units and billboard identity is, in his frame, failing the family that depends on clear decisions.
Waddell's entertainment gift and Cam's grind gift differ, yet both had to walk away from safer scripts (HVAC van; mill-town ceiling; sponsor-controlled magazine/TV gatekeeping). Social media is Cam's structural bet: own the microphone. Daily teaser film is the product bet: own the timeline. Asking Kip for number-one pay is the pricing bet: own the valuation conversation even if the executive says no for years.
Rodgers supplies the inner-game bet: ego death without erasing chips on the shoulder; pressure for teammates as honor; longevity as quiet revenge on twenty-three teams. Williamson/Rogan supply the night-game bet: feel the fraud, stack paint layers, do not shrink. San Carlos supplies the spiritual bet: call the drainage destiny and still butcher before dark.
Put in the Work (closing motto)
Private delusion allowed; public proof required. Imposter feelings can coexist with clear-eyed ability. Redefine the standard for your era; train for the hunt; let doubt fuel without performing for haters. Poser or not, the daily work is the bet that compounds. Long way to go is part of the confidence, not its opposite: tomorrow's mountain still needs a wager.
Confidence without cosmic desert (San Carlos close pass)
The chapter's circular structure matters: opens in the drainage feeling unworthy; closes butchering the bugle bull at dusk, thanking God for gold handfuls of valley light. Confidence for Cam is not a permanent mood. It is a morning loadout: believe enough to train and to ask Kip for number-one pay; humble enough to feel imposter beside Rogan/Goggins/Jocko; stubborn enough to force Sub7 overnight editors; reflective enough (Rodgers mode) to treat green-room shame as ego death fuel rather than only chip-on-shoulder poison.
Waddell's blackjack line exposes the cheap courage problem: people risk cash on chance but not identity on a 10 percent door. Kip's in-out log exposes the expensive courage problem: wanting more life means logging how little of life you spend at home. Cam's social decade exposes the patient courage problem: declare Instagram a failure at month three and you never become the hunting-industry outlier Kip later praises.
- Evergreen vs scraps. Hoyt structure and the $10k-happy era → units-sold awakening are the business curriculum of betting on yourself.
- Athletes Hunt. Billboard as identity contract: train like the league even if the market is the 5 percent West.
- Put in the work. Private delusion + public proof; five-bull claim as self-standard rhetoric; long way to go keeps the bet alive.
Additional beats worth keeping
SHOT authenticity moment matters because Cam leads with craft honesty, not asking for a job. Unpaid early UA phase still counts as a foot-in-door bet. "Being paid meant you were one of the best" is his industry signal reading, even while he claims money was never the obsession.
Waddell on Road Trips appointment TV: no DVR era forced simultaneous culture; personality became blueprint others tried to photocopy without the "it" factor. His HVAC Christmas-party security versus cameraman uncertainty is the chapter's cleanest risk tableau.
Kip on innovation patience: try Instagram once, fail, quit versus ten-year stick. Cam felt locked as competitive inventory ("not working for the other guys") without promotion equal to effort; Western 5% market math made the ask harder and, to him, more necessary. Roy-death hunt with Kip seals the oppressor-to-brother arc in grief time.
Rodgers on entertainment duty: someone in the stands never saw you live; prove the player tonight. Fantasy/betting external noise still loses to self-pressure and brotherhood pride. Cam's couch-critic rant is the fan-side mirror of that pressure.
Closing San Carlos butcher scene: no call needed as bull climbs to him; destiny language; humility retained; success defined as wild valley at sunset more than balance sheet. Put-in-the-work motto refuses both false humility and public brag without miles.
Self-bet checklist drawn from the chapter
- Split the verbs. "I will find success" is a training claim. "I deserve this drainage" is a cosmic claim. Cam hunts while doubting desert; that tension is allowed.
- Audit authenticity. Randy White bow without a rest is the small tell; fake marketing loses hunters; same nose sniffs fake self-talk.
- Pick an evergreen structure when you hate renegotiation. Hoyt story: lifetime intent, practical rolling term.
- Run the percentage door. Waddell: 10% with a return path beats 0% bitterness in the van.
- Price your value as family duty. Scraps → units math; loyalty does not mean silence forever.
- Own distribution. Magazines/TV as landlords; social + daily film as deed.
- Budget innovation. Sub7's ~$50k week is not free courage; sponsors fund bets when you force a clear ask.
- Collect ego deaths. Rodgers: JC, backup years, green room, fan threats; each rebuild improves the player.
- Stack undeniable proof. Williamson paint layers; Rogan mountain; hunt film views; decades of Oregon bulls.
- Private delusion, public work. Motto: tell yourself the standard-redefining story; prove it with five-bull seasons and daily grind; accept the long way left.
Hate-watchers who kept the safe van are explained without mercy in Waddell's voice; Cam agrees the mill-town kid with no dream models can still bet. Confidence is the wager renewed at dawn, not a trophy left on yesterday's kill.
Smash the Gas Pedal Down
Michael Chandler: walk-on, underbelief, 688 days
(MMA/UFC): first official Lift Run Shoot outlier; redline-and-pass-out wiring; cage highlight reel of unanswered shots, lightning hands, takedowns, guillotine lifts. First MMA fight
2009first-round TKO; multiple world titles; Fight of the Year noms. Oregon visit: never run over
11miles; finishes a marathon in the dark summiting Pisgah.
Before tenacity showed, belief lagged. Walk-on wrestler at Missouri (no scholarship); hardest worker; coach favorite; captain; did everything right; gifts for multi-time All-American or national champ, he says; did not give himself permission to win. Cognitive dissonance: told media/coaches he would be champ; between ears did not believe. Senior fifth place; last singlet moment: promise never again underbelieve. Shot into Bellator: 12-0 with 9 first-round finishes; 2011 Eddie Alvarez world title; 2013 rematch split-decision loss; not built to lose. After two more losses: 688 days without a win; body built bigger/faster/stronger yet "subpar" from underbelief. Mentors Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren; inner voice: little guy, little town, little things. Still battles that guy; mindset coach Jim Hensel: sometimes slay dragon, sometimes push into corner. "Walk On" sweatshirt as challenge. Bulletproof look vs human seasons; mental highlight reel of the 688 days and regret steps. Get back on horse; pursuit of impact leaves you open to loss; MMA as metaphor for life fights.
Katie Knight: hard work, mental grit, no one cares fresh
: ultramarathoner; World's Toughest Mudder champion
2021(second attempt); GORUCK Games champ
2022; gym beast; later first deer hunt with Cam, tags buck. Spencer Butte: grinding steep; ~
13.5miles,
90°F, some asphalt; summit grin, barely winded. Why shape? "Hard work." Train every day twice,
sixdays/week; Sunday off (walk dog). Iowa born/bred/corn-fed; no excuses. High school hockey All-American; college CrossFit; strength + endurance + OCR mix. Rim to Rim to Rim ~
42miles: push mind/body; suffer for beauty at sunrise in canyon. Edge: mental grit; 24-hour races: not if something goes wrong, what; race starts at hour
12; hypothermia, lost toenails; keep going. Winning podium best feeling; training is full-time job. Line: as long as no broken bones, body does what mind tells; mind goes first; "you're going to pass out before you die" (they laugh: humans quit earlier; worries about Courtney). Lifting: push Cam to failure reps; saying
"No one cares what you can do fresh"(GORUCK truth): fresh anyone can; tenacity is past fatigue when others stop at 3x10 just as it starts to hurt. Finishers common; winners rarer; undeniable people refuse "just finish."
Ken Rideout Gobi, Cowboy Cerrone, Matt Centrowitz
(again):
2023first ultra = Gobi March,
7days,
155miles Mongolia. Trained two years like only Olympians might; tells sponsors he will win; wins; one sponsor "can't believe"; Ken: I told you; would have died trying or come third and hunt next year. Public win goal = accountability/pressure like a pro; brands live/die with result; empty tank or come back dead. Fear of looking failed is why most hide the win-goal; he said it because of that fear.
Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone(UFC HOF): anytime-anywhere; never turn down fight;
11-year UFC; legacy = people leave bars to watch win or lose. Denver; wealthy doctor grandparents; street fights → kickboxing love; work ethic from grandmother practicing medicine ~
80hrs/week while raising grandkids; if you say you'll do it, do it, no half-ass; friends hang in shifts. Lift Run Shoot in slippers; groin surgery (muscle off bone); still crushes hill. Fake-it-till-you-make-it preachers: maybe; still need real work. Real guy test: beanie in blizzard before 3 a.m., kids' lunches, bus, 12-hour day, home duties vs mom's-basement gym selfie experts.
Matthew Centrowitz Jr.: 3x Olympian;
2016Rio
1500mgold (first US since
1908). Father Matt Sr.: 2x Olympian, 4x US champ, UO, broke Prefontaine 1500 school record. TrackTown kid thrill for Cam. Olympics need prep plus 1-2% luck; one shot every four years. Field all elite; mental separates 1st/5th/12th. Rio tactical/slow ("pedestrian"): soccer OT held NBC; runners warmed then cooled
~10-15min (felt like hour); others panic; Matt stays race-ready. Leads most of race; late boxed; bodycheck; elbow down, inside sidestep, bid for home; led
~1450/1500m; not fastest but jump mattered in milliseconds. Critics on pace; Cam: gold > clock.
2011NCAA outdoor 1500: throat-slit gesture; feared DQ and dad; dad: as long as winning, don't care. Shit-talk/mind games; smirk; not there to make friends; plays villain if story needs one; admits focusing haters for chip (1000% honest). Cam quote inset: hard to be satisfied after 15 miles.
Derek Wolfe haters; Courtney smash-gas Triple Crown
on "Must be nice": hates it; never met a hater doing better; Ray Lewis eagle/crow altitude speech via Wolfe: fly with eagles; be alpha; whining because you did not work. Synonyms list: persistent, stubborn, resolute, dogged, perseverant, steadfast, unyielding, unwilling to let go, unwavering. Personification:
Courtney Dauwalter(also Ch4). Rogan: seems normal; quiet demon must exist. UTMB win line: when given chance at challenging/difficult, take it; today difficult but worth it. Ultra not for fanfare; huge mountain days; brain helping body do more. Dislikes finishing knowing she could have done better; all-in see what's possible; results land where they land. Moab
2402017: Cam hears she obliterated field (~
10hour win margin per talk); still pushing with husband pacing to a time target:
"smash the gas pedal down"with nobody chasing. Not titanium; Western States
2019hip DNF after
2018win: ramped climb/pace/miles without recovery; learned listen to flags vs couch comfort; wants to run whole life. Colorado Trail record effort: Cam worries she pushes like animals that can die; she has people who brake for her. April
2023chat: Cam invents goal Western States + Hardrock + UTMB (
172km Mont-Blanc) in one summer; she has won each separately; "absolutely someone could"; "I'd be willing to try"; cheeseburgers joke; balance training with body happy. Summer
2023:
10-week span wins all three (Triple Crown never done); records in first two. Always moves goalposts.
Chapter 7 map: past fresh, belief fight, public do, move posts.
| Person | Tenacity exhibit | Number / proof |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf (commercial) | Wildness after 11 years trained | Snarl after meat tease |
| Chandler | Underbelief → 688-day rebuild | 12-0 Bellator; marathon LRS |

| Courtney | Smash gas with lead; Triple Crown | 2023 three 100s in ~10 weeks |
| Wolfe | Eagle vs crow haters | Must-be-nice rant |
Chandler deeper: seasons, metaphor, Walk On
Impact pursuit leaves you open to criticism, loss, valleys. What else is life if you are not putting yourself out there? MMA fights on Saturday nights are metaphors for ordinary fights: odds overcome, dominance, back-and-forth battles. Seasons exist: bulletproof cylinders firing, then dumps needing pull-out. Mental highlight reel of the 688 days and regret steps becomes practice inventory. Get back on the horse; surprise yourself how fast losses can fade when next success arrives. Walk On sweatshirt = challenge to the little-town voice. Coaches believed; he would run through a wall on order; left others in dust; still the between-ears gap. Hensel: slay dragon sometimes, corner it other times; forever battling that guy is allowed.
Katie deeper: OCR misery, podium payoffs, failure reps
WTM water obstacles and heavy carries aim to make athletes miserable; hypothermia and lost toenails already logged; race "starts" at hour twelve. Winning podium pays the year of twice-daily work. Lifting night: she pushes Cam past comfort into failure reps that finally feel good. Standard crowd quits at moderate run or 3x10 just as body starts to feel it; tenacity asks why quit then. Finish talk is common; win talk is rare because finish alone satisfies most; undeniable people refuse finish-as-enough. Cam aches next day after training with her; that ache is the point. Beauty of Oregon summits and Grand Canyon sunrise do not cancel the grind; they justify it.
Ken accountability vs vanity prediction
Sponsor disbelief after Gobi win: many call brands promising feats and never come close. Ken cannot imagine that pattern; would return injured or third with a next-year hunt. Fear of looking failed is exactly why he said win out loud. Brands live and die with result; empty tank required; "win or come back dead" is his pressure contract, not a medical prescription. Public win-goal is professional athlete pressure self-installed.
Cowboy deeper: shifts of friends, real-guy test
Grandmother perspective checks: worse things exist than today's bad; if you say you will be there, be there; finish projects hard. Friends hang in shifts; cannot match his fun/work pace. Slippers LRS after groin muscle-off-bone surgery still crushes hill; Cam glimpses what makes Cowboy Cowboy. Fake-it-till-you-make-it preachers: maybe if they keep preaching they become the guy; still need real work. Real-guy checklist: beanie in blizzard 3 a.m., kids' lunches, bus drop, twelve-hour day, home duties vs mom's-basement gym selfie "experts" posting quotes. Anytime-anywhere legacy: people leave bars to watch win or lose because he is throwing down.
Centrowitz deeper: villain role, dad line, kick jump
Olympics special vs NBA best-of-seven: one shot every four years; chances rare. All finals fields elite; mental separates places. Pedestrian-pace critics miss NBC soccer-OT cool-down; everyone cold; no one wants to be pacemaker; Matt leads slow; late boxed after bodycheck; drops elbow, inside sidestep, bid for home without arm out; jump mattered because he was not field's fastest; led ~1450/1500. Gold > clock; middle-distance Olympic WRs rare because tactics. 2011 NCAA throat-slit gesture: celebration planning as focus tool; feared DQ and dad; dad to critics: as long as winning, do not care. Shit-talk, smirk, banter without intending disrespect; not there to make friends; only goal win. Haters' words stay until death; will play villain if story needs one; deep inside good guy; admits focusing shit-talkers for chip (1000% honest). Cam inset: hard to be satisfied after 15 miles.
Wolfe / synonyms / Courtney deeper smash-gas
Celebrate haters ("Must be nice"). Wolfe: never met a hater doing better; look where they are. Ray Lewis eagle/crow altitude: fly with eagles, not cawing crows; alpha eats first because eagle; whining because you did not work. Synonyms for tenacious: persistent, stubborn, resolute, dogged, perseverant, steadfast, unyielding, unwilling to let go, unwavering. Personification: Courtney (also Ch4 consistency). Rogan: seems normal; waiting for demon; quiet demon must exist. UTMB win: when given chance at challenging/difficult, take it; difficult but worth it. Ultra not for fanfare; huge mountain days; brain helping body do more. Moab 240 2017: NYT "obliterated"; Cam first assumed wrong course; ~10 hour talk margin; husband pacing to a time target: smash gas with nobody chasing. Not titanium; WS 2019 hip DNF after 2018 win: ramped climb/pace/miles without recovery/maintenance; learned listen to flags vs couch comfort; wants to run whole life; Colorado Trail record effort; Cam worries animal-death romanticism; she has people who brake. April 2023: keep finding what's possible; Cam invents Western States + Hardrock + UTMB 172 km one summer; she has won each separately; "Absolutely someone could"; "I'd be willing to try"; cheeseburgers joke; balance excitement with body happy. Summer 2023: ~10-week Triple Crown; records in first two. Always moves goalposts; epic things nobody did before.
Don't Stop (closing motto)
One person to beat: yourself. Not for others; need; push limits. Not battling others; battling body; find absolute withstand limit. Without challenges, shell of ability. If able, must attempt; live toward full potential daily. Competition real; man must prove better; archrival is morning mirror; by night beat him or beat up on him. Doubters, obstacles, weather, circumstances, heartaches, failures cannot stop you; only you can stop you. Struggle lifelong war; each day winnable battle. Half-self in a shell, or full potential: choice yours.
Tenacity chapter close: smash gas when coasting tempts; keep the war daily; mirror first.
Opening wolf commercial (full beat)
Under Armour boots spot: "What drives man beyond?" Cam and wolf hunt the woods; narration: instinct to defy the civilized world; in the wild that instinct is not enough; nature hungrier. End: bull elk rack on back; Twilight-film trained wolf snarls; Cam look = I won. After wrap he tells filmmakers truest end would be arrowing the wolf. Trained from 5 weeks, now 11 years, still wild at heart; tenacious heart still beating. Cam: spent a lot of time around wolves like that. Bridge into human redliners who go until pass out.
Cross-cast Lift Run Shoot notes
Chandler: first official LRS outlier; cage highlight reel (30+ unanswered, lightning hands, takedowns, guillotine lifts); podcast launch guest for outlier mindset; Oregon surprise = never over 11 miles then dark Pisgah marathon finish. Katie: online persona matches trail; first deer hunt later tags buck with Cam. Cowboy: "Anytime, Anyplace" catchphrase; wild man. Matt: TrackTown USA thrill for Eugene-area Cam; Pre school-record father lineage. Courtney: also lives in consistency chapter; humility hard to interview past; competitive without hate-to-lose cliche. Wolfe: NFL star voice for hater toast. Shared thread: smash gas after the moment when coasting would still "win enough."
Numbers that refuse coasting
Chandler never over 11 miles then finishes a marathon in the dark. Katie twice daily six days, Sunday dog walk only. Ken two years of training aimed at Gobi win call. Cowboy eleven UFC years anytime-anywhere. Centrowitz first US 1500 gold since 1908 after a cooled start. Courtney three 100s in roughly ten weeks after inventing the summer with Cam in April talk. The stack is not talent trivia; it is a refusal to treat "enough" as the finish line when the gas pedal still moves.
Spend Time Doing Something You Love
Musashi, Rogan, and passion that draws a crowd
As Eastmans' editor, Cam quoted Rogan quoting Miyamoto Musashi (Book of Five Rings): once you understand the way broadly, you see it in all things; plain: path to success in one domain eases others. Rifle killers become bow killers; multi-sport naturals; business breaks. Cam wishes he believed in himself as much as Joe believes in him; "Powerful JRE" changed worlds.
Joe's one-thing: martial arts passion age 15-22; first hope he was not a loser; US Open taekwondo champ at 19; Massachusetts state champ 4 years running; authentic UFC commentating; proved he could do hard/terrifying well. Age-19 mornings: alarm, jump like house on fire; pleasure as weakness then; maniac girlfriend could not stand; better than ten snoozes; muscle of discipline via inspiration. Life often about should/supposed-to, then want becomes easier. Joe books guests for passion, not only popularity; found Cam via YouTube bowhunting obsession. Intense passion draws people in any arena; chase hard; who knows what happens.
Thursday night University of Oregon: 500+ pack a hall for neuroscientist Andrew Huberman (Stanford neurobiology/ophthalmology; Huberman Lab from Jan 2021); rock-star scientist; sold-out lives; street selfies.
Huberman: from Froggy to "I can do hard things"
Physicist dad; wholesome dinners, TV off; obsessive learning: age 6 pet-store fish catalogs; medieval weapons; age 7-8 asked to lecture class or would not show; deep voice nickname Froggy; adrenal mutation; teased for Legos/fish/encyclopedia/Guinness talk. Parents divorce at 13; dad gone; sister out; mom struggling; skateboard years 13-18 "super dark," alone; barely finish HS; month in youth detention; follow girlfriend to UCSB; 19: Ds, breakup, bagel delivery, bad attitude; "officially a loser"; bitter/victim; wrote two-page letter to mom (really to self): turn around; teachers irrelevant; do the work. Foothill College; memorize textbooks; lift/run respond fast; straight As; back to UCSB psych BA; front-row academic beast. Goals written: PhD by 30, faculty by 35, tenure by 40. Master's neurobiology Berkeley; PhD neuroscience UC Davis; Stanford faculty 2016. PhD nights: 5 p.m. lock lab, punk, ferret (complex visual brains) and monkey tracer experiments on binocular vision/genetics. Five-year Stanford postdoc after PhD. School-year math he recites: leave HS 17; ~5 undergrad; 2 master; 4 PhD; 5 postdoc; 5 junior prof; 12 tenured. Not overnight. Parallel to Cam: divorce loneliness; temporary pain vs real childhood pain; compartmentalize ultras.
Childhood passions return (Chris Williamson: audiobooks → podcasts). Levi Morgan: ten-year-old would pass out seeing career; shot bow from love/obsession. Buscaglia: life without passion is mere existence. Cam found bowhunting success/calling at ~20; never more passionate than now; responsibility to live with passion.
Evan Hafer: espresso date, kill fear, NYSE grind
(Black Rifle Coffee founder/exec chair): exact moment espresso changed life: Nov
1997, Vivace, Capitol Hill Seattle; greatest shot; bought espresso book; then Green Beret path first. Northern Idaho town ~
800; logger family; grandfather/father businesses; military given. Expected few years then home; Green Beret incl. Iraq invasion; CIA contractor;
40+rotations Iraq/Afghanistan
3-5months each;
2014burnt out; meets wife with Denver coffee shop; had been roasting thousands of pounds; combine. No outside check; savings; 450 sq ft mountain house; Tacoma; Seattle condo; garage roaster; build culture that lets him be him. Cam cites path to iconic veteran-owned roastery / public company (book: ~
$900M/ at one point NYSE ~
$1.7Bvaluation figures as stated). How: "I kill fear. Fear is a cancer." Stubborn; 100% committed; never quit mindset; last decade business punches harder than prior life:
4.5-5hrs sleep; years 1-2 sold everything; new kid/wife; missed rent; maxed cards; now ~
900employees; public markets; board; tens of thousands of stores;
$100Minventory ("suck it up"). No Friday beers when cognitively thin. Hates "never work a day" passion cliché: find something to grind a decade; grab when you cannot take another step. Garage to NYSE; not brightest; lived paycheck to paycheck; difference = push through, ride fear.
Magazines, Remi Warren, Courtney joy, Rodgers/Gladwell, Lance
Cam loves print hunting magazines: feel, smell, framed articles, albums Tracey endures; heritage vs untrusting internet; paper/ads/subs/editors = substance. Complementary passion: writing adventures. 1999 self-publish Bowhunting Trophy Blacktail (borrow money, barely break even; sold via Bow Rack); "failure" that got Eastmans' attention → writing → EBJ editor/TV → more books. Backcountry Bowhunting obsesses Remi Warren (Apex Predator, Solo Hunters; Live Wild podcast Rogan's favorite hunting show): read cover-to-cover "900 times"; carried hunting. Best? Lots of time; biggest year 323 field days pre-family; thousands of reps; fail ~1000 times then 1001 works; as kid would not shoot day-one buck on five-day hunt, wait last evening to stay out; gravitates to low-odds hard hunts (weird formula → failures → experience → success). Magazines/DVDs; thought only he and dad backpack-hunted; solo-hunt voice rare vs buddy-safety dogma. Skill set for self-reliance: Do I have what it takes? Dream: inspire others' limited hunt weeks; intention (waited on family, chose focus) not "must be nice." Quote from Cam's first book still true 25 years later: even successful wilderness time 99% not fun; rugged packs; thrill/desire still draw him.
Courtneyon running passion: if dread multiple days, step back; should be fun chosen suffering; lucky to lace mountains; bad-day bench-testing appreciation. Prefers both races and adventures.
Aaron Rodgerson LRS: respect mastery and platform; cites Gladwell
Outliers~
10,000hours; passion inspiring; untapped dreams vs rat race. Cam: cannot compare to NFL great; can share passion density.
Lance Armstrong: decades impact (Tour dominance,
2008Boston with Cam, later Austin 10K Cam hosted); shiny object for training and chip vs critics; Cam calls icon/great competitor while nodding "say what you want about Lance, the man." Joe found Cam carrying rock; tweet → suddenly Aaron. Common JRE/Cam guest theme: obsession ridden to positive endeavor. Cam example that passion elevates whole life.
Chapter 8 map: way, hard things, decade grind, keep chasing.
| Person | Passion object | Grind marker |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Rogan | Martial arts → UFC/JRE | Jump-out-of-bed 19; guest curation |
| Andrew Huberman | Learning / neuroscience | Letter at 19; years of school/postdoc |
| Evan Hafer | Espresso / BRCC | Garage → public; ~900 staff |
| Remi Warren | Hunting / teaching it | 323 field days; intentional life design |
| Cam | Bowhunt + write | 1999 book → Eastmans → platform |
| Courtney | Running joy + suffer | Step back if dread streaks |
| Levi Morgan | Archery love | Kid obsession → career |
| Aaron Rodgers | Mastery respect | 10k hours nod; LRS visit |
Rogan deeper: discipline muscle, guest curation
Age-19 house-on-fire mornings built the discipline muscle via inspiration; pleasure-as-weakness phase drove girlfriend crazy; Joe laughs he was a maniac nobody would hang with; still better than ten snoozes. Always an excuse; after getting through, life often about should/supposed-to until want becomes easier. Guests chosen for passion density, not only popularity metrics; Cam's YouTube bowhunting obsession was the signal. Passion stands out and impacts people by belief plus full chase; field does not matter.
Huberman deeper: school math, ferrets, pebble, B+
Divorce at 13 opened skate years and alone houses; detention month; UCSB Ds and bagel bitterness; victim wait for great teacher; letter ended the wait. Community college intensity like athlete training; weights responded; running; "I'm pretty good at this"; straight As unlocked return; front-row beast regardless of annoying teachers. Written age goals held across master's Berkeley, PhD Davis, Stanford 2016. Lab ritual: 5 p.m. lock, punk, ferrets (complex visual brains) and monkey tracers for binocular wiring genetics. Five-year postdoc shock to Cam; Huberman recites decade stack out loud. Parallel pain: Cam's divorce loneliness makes temporary race pain compartmentalizable; Huberman agrees hard-things sentence must be honest fact, not mantra for a two-year-old; near-perfect childhood ideal plus enough hard experience to say the sentence; pebble in shoe keeps work. Confidence FAQ answer: do hard challenging things; favorite grade is B+ in brutal postdoc-level neural development class because it proves the sentence.
Childhood passions return; Buscaglia; Cam at 20
Williamson: kid audiobooks → adult podcasts. Question: what did you dearly love as a child; do you still? Levi Morgan: ten-year-old would pass out; shot bow from love and obsession with every piece. Buscaglia line Cam holds: life without passion is mere existence. Some never find it; Cam found bowhunt success/calling ~20; passion has not dimmed; more passionate now; gift of life = responsibility to live with passion; what will define you; what fuels the fire.
Hafer deeper: culture, inventory guts, cliché kill
Logger/small-town hard work + family business watching + military given. Expected short service then home town work; instead decades of rotations then CIA contractor burnout 2014; wife coffee shop + his recreational roasting = build own. No conform-to-corporate; actions > words; team around fulfilled passion. "Fuck them" to cannot-work voices; stubborn; never-quit DNA; only near-quit thoughts in last decade of company punches: sleep debt, unpaid early years, sold everything, maxed cards, new family, then scale to ~900 staff and public complexity. $100M inventory requires iron gut; rewrite playbook without Friday beers when cognitive function is thin. Passion cliché hate: not "never work again"; find decade grind fuel so when you cannot take another step you can grab and pull. Garage to NYSE ~$1.7B stated peak; not brightest bulb; smarter peers exist; difference = push through self-doubt and ride fear. Cam's "how did you know bowhunting was passion" echo: trying things + dedication understandable; leap to iconic company still hard; Hafer answer starts with killing fear.
Magazines / Remi deeper / intention
Print vs web: paper bought, ads paid, subs sold, hearts into words, editors pore, designers assemble; online can be email-speed international with thin substance. First book expensive borrow/barely break even; still sold hard; Eastmans validation hard to earn; job cascade followed. Remi: 900 reads; three hundred twenty-three field days; fail 1000 then 1001; kid five-day hunt delay shoot to stay out; low-odds hunts extend time (weird formula); backpack and solo voices rare then; self-reliance skill intimidation: Do I have what it takes?; now loves making limited hunt weeks more successful for others; intention waited on family and chose focus; loved it so grind did not feel like work; built something else through that. First-book wilderness quote still applies 25 years later: 99% not fun; thrill and desire still consume and draw back.
Courtney joy + Rodgers/Gladwell + Lance + common theme
Courtney: dread streaks = step back alert; running should stay enjoyable chosen pastime; lucky to lace mountains; bad days test benches and notice little stuff; wants both races and adventures. Rodgers: fascinated by high-level mastery; Instagram search after Joe intro; respect work, mastery, willingness to share platform/story; Gladwell Outliers ~10k hours respect; beautiful life; untapped dreams vs rat race; passion inspires. Cam: cannot compare to NFL great; can share passion pour. Lance: Tour dominance, 2008 Boston together, Austin 10K Cam hosted; shiny object when training and facing detractors; chip to prove critics wrong; personal icon framing with "say what you want about Lance, the man." Joe found rock-carrying crazy man → tweet → Aaron. Shared guest theme across JRE and Cam shows: passion/obsession ridden to positive endeavor after overcoming much. Cam as proof passion elevates whole life.
Chase Your Passion (closing motto)
What is next; bigger adventure; how long can the ride last; how deep the dream belief. Expect much of yourself/dream without pipe-dream fantasy; also do not overtrain/overcommit into overwhelm. Go with flow; consistent work; enjoy journey; months not days. Hard to imagine 50 miles from a struggling 10K; keep running; eye on prize. Warehouse supervisor Cam could not imagine current life; did dream bowhunt + write; job ladder enabled chasing unrealistic opportunities. If niche bowhunting story can change trajectory, anybody's passion can. Name passion/purpose; dream far. World wants doubt; humbles lifted eyes; beats runners toward dreams; blocks success shots; cannot stop. Keep lifting. Keep running. Keep shooting. World loves you on the way up (reminds them of dreams); hates at the top (reminds them they quit). Too many quit because dreams look big/unrealistic; stick; be never-quit. Undeniable people dream bigger, chase passion; change world by first changing the lens on yourself.
Passion chapter close: decade fuel, intention, lens change; the world may cheer then hate; stick anyway.
Opening Musashi article beat (full)
Eastmans' Bowhunting Journal piece "Finding Your Way - Train Hard, Hunt Easy" opened with Rogan quoting Musashi on UFC PPV: once you understand the way broadly, you see it in all things. Cam translation: path to success in one domain eases others. Rifle-to-bow success stories; multi-sport naturals who also get jobs and breaks; readers know the type. Wish: believe in self as much as Joe believes in Cam; friend help in business/life; Powerful JRE label accurate in Cam's view.
Passion magnet nights and platforms
UO Thursday: 500+ for Huberman vs expectation that only Taylor Swift moves weekday students; podcast explosion since Jan 2021; paid premium; street recognition. Cam photo captions in source (Cam with Huberman / Cam with Remi) mark relationship proof, not decoration. Remi: Outdoor Channel shows; Rogan favorite hunting podcast; "real deal" industry label Cam agrees with. Black Rifle: Cam frames Hafer as born leader from special ops to public company. Rodgers LRS: blast + appreciation. Through-line: platforms amplify passion already visible in the work (YouTube rock carries, lab lectures, garage roasting, 323-day years).
Closing bridge
TENACITY without PASSION burns out; PASSION without TENACITY stays mood. Smash-gas people need a love that survives decade weather; passion people need the mirror war so love becomes output.
Numbers that prove decade fuel
Rogan fifteen to twenty-two martial arts immersion; Huberman years stacked past any overnight myth; Hafer November 1997 espresso date through public-company complexity; Remi three hundred twenty-three field days in a peak year; Cam 1999 first book through Eastmans jobs into platform guests who share the same obsession pattern. Passion here is measured in years and reps, not in a weekend mood board.
Face Reality
Roy Roth: Kodiak tags, Alaska respect, measuring sticks
Kodiak Island base camp after 12 days: Roy sings Badfinger; three bucks (two Pope & Young); Cam two P&Y; pizza/cheeseburger talk; then Roy stands: still has a deer tag; will not leave for a hamburger; tell pilot three more days; wife/kids expect him tonight; Cam must return to Springfield Utility Board. Next day Roy arrows his biggest buck. Lower-48 hard (Eagle Cap, predators) is not Alaska level. 2007 moose: antlers short of 50" nonresident legal; Cam hands bow/release; Roy resident-legal perfect shot; pack work begins (they have shot each other's bows for decades; Cam once killed POW Island black bear with Roy's bow).
2015Alaskan Bowhunters Association keynote twice: Cam feels tip-of-spear audience; many Alaskans tough from place alone; grinders provide for families without fame. Pride when Wasilla stories circulate about Roy. Toughness as undeniable trait; Roy set the bar. Robert W. Service inset: race of men that don't fit in. Grandpa
Bob Seibold: quarter-horse trainer; junior-year eastern Oregon ranch; "sugar tit" / no cry here; hard and fair; died too young.
Measuring sticks: Fred Bear; Chuck Adams (five official P&Y world records in Cam's telling); Bart Schleyer (longbow, obsidian heads; Foster's Taxidermy stories; killed/eaten by grizzly at 49 moose hunting Yukon alone); Paul Schafer (85-lb recurve; lions, Cape buffalo, brown bears, sheep; 5'10"/190; died 45 ski accident; Silvertip book). Rich life over long life in mountains. Compare up to 90-100 lb recurve grizzly killers and 200-lb packs, not down to street peers or "why 90 lb draw / why 70-lb rock" critics who seek reasons to do less.
Last year together 2015: July giant brown 9'6", another 7-footer, black bear (one arrow each); September epic moose; film The Tribute. TV network wanted Cam-as-superhero pilot; he filmed Roy Beast Mode Bowhunting sample; network disliked; Cam refuses act; show dies; they keep hunting. Brothers: industry shit-talk common; Roy never talks Cam down; Cam: "You're not Roy. He's ten times tougher." True outliers do not talk shit. Three Sisters scout: soaked tents; Roy labels partner "whiner"; you do not whine; it is the way it is. Roy's success keys (to Cam's article): stay positive; learn from those who know more; make luck with extras; gifts for God's glory. Those measuring sticks died; mountains will not let forever push.
Dakota Meyer: sufferfest, Ganjgal, failure faced
Lift Run Shoot with Medal of Honor Marine Dakota Meyer (Battle of Ganjgal, Kunar, Sept 8, 2009; podcast You're Human; Own the Dash Gym; Dash Hydrate). Mindset: only difference is want/not want. HS track/football average; Corps ran a lot; after: drink daily path to 265 lb; change; signed 100-miler canceled; Austin Rattler 50K crush; mile 26 emotion: nobody cares if finish or not; still needs the sufferfest. Peaks/valleys: most pull ripcord in valley; Courtney once quit 100 at mile 60 then learned pain is the race. Resiliency = stay in suffering to learn; growth needs uncomfortable. Farm childhood: animals do not care how you feel; Corps same.
Citation beat (condensed): ambush >50 fighters; radio four cut off; Meyer gunner on gun-truck; multiple trips under fire; evacuate wounded Afghans; switch trucks when gun fails; shrapnel arm; fifth trip on foot recover teammate bodies; six-hour battle. He rejects hero frame: every human capable when belief bigger than self and love of others > self; teammates/Afghans suffering; he could try. Takeaway he insists keep: biggest failure of his life; faced not ignored; fuels helping others now. Failure = not getting results you set; hard work + want ≠ no fail. Empathy for losers because he knows the feeling. Face reality head-on or never get past it. Dates that change thinking; he saw best and worst of humans in one day; tested whether he is who he said; now knows he can figure anything; most wonder forever.
October 4, 2015: Roy's Buck
Colorado deer hunt with Kip Fulks and Marc Womack; early rut; flat country vs Cam's contour mountains; blown mule deer close; doubt voices; dusk 60-yard whitetail; wait morning to blood trail. Night: Tracey calls; Roy fell to death off Pioneer Peak sheep hunting. Two heroes: dad and mentor Roy; mountain he thought would never beat Roy. Sleepless; force himself out to trail; memories of rain/snow/heat hunts; "us against the world" ended; pedestal cracked though he knew mountains win. Kip: "we got 'im"; stud whitetail named Roy's Buck. ~30 Alaska hunts with Roy; charging browns, sheep country; memories since muted/pain-marked. Choice after loss: stagnant grief or carry on as Roy would want (Rich Froning: seek challenges; good things through adversity).
Parenting mirror: Truett's record
Pull-ups: meet David Goggins 2018 50K then gym; Goggins 100 pull-ups finisher; Truett starts 100/day; Goggins video "savages / carry the boats." Goggins prior Guinness 4,030 in 17h16m (2013). Truett aims beat that (4,100 less time) then 24h record need beat 8,008. First try Apr 22, 2023: fails ~half; miserable; almost never again; then six months dedication. Second try: past 6,600 slowing; Cam shares Courtney pain lesson; winners push when it hurts; bathroom mirror "different gear"; wife tears; finishes 8,100 in 24h. Roy/Cam question; mental life; "you'll thank me eventually" lands. Cam thanks God; validation work ethic stuck; not complete father failure.
Destiny interrupted: 2021 Alaska grizzly
| Beat | Reality faced | Outcome signal |
|---|---|---|
| Kodiak open tag | Comfort vs unfinished tag | Biggest buck alone |
| Ganjgal / 50K | Hero myth vs failure owned | Empathy + help others |
| Oct 4, 2015 | Immortal mentor myth | Roy's Buck; carry on |

| 2021 grizzly | Bow-only destiny ideal | Team kill; own the miss |
Chapter 9 map: tough bar, own failure, grief hunt, return.
Write Your Story (closing motto)
What story is your life writing; have you put pen to paper. Celebrate tough/determined/focused/passionate/purposeful outliers; if you are one, keep going. Set standard; push envelope; share legendary stories; make your own readable later. Be different/daring; immerse in passion; revere greats; embrace daunting odds/setbacks; when tough, keep going. Life is competition across arenas; prepare; winning easy; getting up after knockdown is what matters for audacious goals. After toughest arena conditions, regular world is cakewalk; come home share story. All still have story left; what page today.
Alaska culture, Beast Mode, and the men who do not fit in
Speaking twice at the Alaskan Bowhunters Association banquet felt backward to Cam: tip-of-the-spear hunters who live hard conditions year-round do not need lower-48 tips. Fame is optional there; providing for families in mountains is the point. Roy entered that culture as an outsider and earned respect until Wasilla stories named him. Service poem inset fits the restless breed Cam and Roy measured against. Grandpa Seibold's ranch season installed no-babying grit before bowhunting legends arrived as measuring sticks. Fred Bear and Chuck Adams (five official P&Y world records in Cam's account) answered "how can I live that life." Bart Schleyer at Foster's Taxidermy: longbow, self-knapped obsidian, Roy's one-word verdict "beast," then Yukon grizzly death at 49 alone on moose. Paul Schafer's 85-pound recurve resume and ski-accident death at 45 via Silvertip. Pattern: rich short mountain lives. Cam refuses street-level comparison; he aims at 90-100 pound recurve grizzly men and 200-pound pack carriers while critics ask why 90-pound draws or 70-pound rocks.
Beast Mode Bowhuntingpilot of Roy's hunt died when the network wanted Cam-as-superhero training reel; he would not act the part; Eastmans' TV / Elk Chronicles hosting already existed; they kept hunting. Brother loyalty: industry shit-talk; Cam's stock reply that the talker is not Roy and is not ten times as tough. Three Sisters soaked-bag "whiner" story: Roy blunt, not malicious; toughness is not complaining when tents fail. Article answer on success: positivity, learn up, make luck with extras, gifts for God's glory. Measuring-stick men died; mountains collect debts.
Meyer citation and Cam as translator
Inner voice at LRS with Medal of Honor guests matches Alaska banquet voice: what is a small-town bowhunter doing talking to this person. Cam's answer: relatability translator for the rest of us. Meyer's farm + Corps results culture: animals and missions ignore mood. Full citation beat matters for "face reality": multiple gun-truck trips, near-point-blank fire, truck swaps, shrapnel, on-foot body recovery, six hours. Helplessness watching die; scared for others and self; never thought he would make it home. Hero rejection: capability when love of others exceeds self. Failure ownership without loophole responsibility removal; hard work does not cancel failed results; facing failure builds empathy tools for others down. Dates that rewire; one day held save/kill/sad/every emotion/loss/gain/test of identity; fortune is knowing capability so the world cannot invent a brand-new unbeatable category.
Grief miles and muted glories
Flat eastern Colorado puzzle hunting vs contour mountains; early rut; one chance must convert. After mule-deer miss, dusk 60-yard whitetail, overnight wait for broadhead work, then the call. Immortal-mentor myth vs mountain truth. Blood-trail tears; 18-year-old invitation memory "Dude, you need to bowhunt"; rain/snow/heat archives; pedestal vs always-came-home pattern broken. Naming Roy's Buck; ~30 Alaska trips catalog (charging browns, wounded blacks, sheep country); future Alaska dread; muted post-death memories. Froning soft-people diagnosis; dogfight to the top; seek challenges; adversity grows; choice = stagnant grief or carry on.
Parenting: intensity owned
Iron-fist then show-don't-tell; Tracey as glue; Taryn math GPA credit to mom. Truett podcast as mirror Cam disliked: intensity, yelling, 2010 blacktail last for years, 2018 return. Excuses (too young with Tanner; life-is-tough with Truett) fail against eight-year data. Life/death seriousness of hunting vs sport/vacation framing. Early Alaska bears and Africa and Hells Canyon and football-to-bull logistics were Roy/Cam adult norms misapplied to teens. Entitlement fear vs push-away risk; indifference yields average; wanted winners who earn. Goggins 2018 ignition; 100/day habit; savage video; 4,030 baseline; 4,100 interim goal; 8,008 target; April 2023 public fail at ~half; text "am I failure if I stop"; Cam: break OK if building; six-month second camp; 6,600 slowdown; Courtney mile-60 lesson relayed; bathroom gear change; 8,100. Mental gate; thank-you joke; God/family health; work-ethic validation without claiming perfect fatherhood.
Grizzly: mercy, guns, singing camp
2021 return as prove-to-Roy not public; Kip blood brother; entertain the watcher above. Nearly perfect 50-yard pass-through; blood into alders; death-sprint hope; guide professionalism vs Cam's gun-free romantic rule; nonresident guide law. Motionless then head-lift; four yards full draw; skull bad bow percentage; charge; chest arrow; hip bullet divert; back shot neutralize. Fuck-frustration at interrupted destiny; respect to bear; thanks to unflappable partners; team-effort honesty; not a true bow kill by his line; mercy pit; patience second-guess. Still: hunt > kill; own errors; work harder. Alone blood-trail preference for mountain truth. Pack-out: Roy singing while quartering midnight moose; wet snow tent; candy wrappers; aloud magazine reading; "if you're out there, anything can happen." Dedication line to Big Roy; singing in the distance.
Hemingway now; Service men; Schafer/Bart deaths as warning
Hemingway epigraph sets the chapter rule: past proofs do not bank. Kodiak humming then tag realism. Moose handoff legality lesson. Banquet humility. Service men who break hearts and roam. Grandpa sugar-tit line. Bear/Adams goal inflation. Bart obsidian sheep and Yukon end. Schafer Africa-to-Alaska strength then ski end. 2015 bear/moose last season and The Tribute. Network superhero refusal. Whiner storm. God-glory success list. LRS translator role. Meyer 265 to 50K emotion. Citation trips. Failure-as-best-teacher. Oct 4 call. Roy's Buck. Thirty Alaska trips. Froning seek challenges. Parenting 10,000 mistakes line. Truett eight-year gap. Goggins boat video. 8,100. Destiny wilderness essay. 2021 team grizzly. Singing pack-out. Write Your Story: celebrate outliers; prepare for arenas; cakewalk after hard conditions; what page today.

Make the Most Impact
Find / film: Branlin Shockey and story as life
Cam found purpose in bowhunting; purpose need not be physical; running/fighting/competing strengthen; other callings valid. Alaska return film Once We Were Wolves (~1.5M views stated): Branlin Shockey decades crafting hunting film to ignite ancestral spirit; captures what others miss. Irony: son of Jim Shockey (muzzleloader icon Cam once bandana-copied; writer/hunter impact) and brother of Eva Shockey (LRS guest: long-range bow, jealousy, personal brand; Cam's "Princess Diana of hunting" label). Branlin: not hunter-first; little hunting-film fandom by antler size; business major until dad pulls him to film series; six months editing school → career. Joan Didion line he holds: we tell ourselves stories in order to live; impact via any medium (theater, Instagram, campfire, phone); outdoors inspire do-more; disconnection from weekend adventure/forts; wants part of reconnecting millions. Success measured by number of stories (someone's saying Cam cites). Grateful partnership shines different light on hunting.
Embrace: Tulsi Gabbard service thread
LRS: rock on shoulder mid-mountain; Cam "mountain never lies"; she: military keeps honest regardless of rank. Beast on steep; Cam wants tough capable leaders. Hawaii ocean swim lessons, surf, teen clean-water work; fought landfill over Oahu aquifer (once contaminated, island cannot truck water forever); signatures vs powerful senate ally of operator; win taught teen change is possible. Beach cleanup futility → elementary program linking litter to surf spots. Age
21: statehouse seat open; study poly-sci vs serve now ("be the change"); door-knock thousands despite shy introvert; answer to "too young": want fresh hard workers or retired kick-back. Won without lifelong politician aspiration; common thread: how best serve God and others; make most impact; prayer/introspection. Confidence from purpose/mission, not degree checklist. Politics-as-horse-race critique; vote if unhappy. Faith = strength/clarity/courage daily; not popularity; validation not from Washington; happiness from try-to-serve; flawed; unconditional love.
Share: pebbles, prisons, positive fuel
Cam from nothing / chip / more than deserved: if he can, others can; greatness impacts. Nedd Brockmann: wealth un-takeable; legacy/impact remains; frustrated by wasted potential; running inspires ripples (10 → 10 → build). Dakota again: stop only naming what you are against; be for hope; impact good whether Jocko/Goggins/Robbins path. Huberman UO night: share wisdom widely → grateful friends teach you; do not hold close; generous science resources; neural regeneration lab aim world impact. Prison talk ~100 men: Cam's early small circle vs later large; action same; impact the person next to you. Viscott quote: discover gift / develop it / give it away. Social media as inspire-to-do-more (even one mile). Evan Hafer: ignore hate; put positive fuel; refuse toxic fuel brokerage; army of public positive-fuel people needed (Cam/Joe/Goggins/Jocko). Cam could spread negativity from hurdles; chooses inspire; still amazed bowhunter lines form for weight-loss/hunt stories.
Love / shiny object: Sally McRae and Chandler
(also Ch3): boundless enthusiasm;
Choose Strong; joy vs fleeting happiness; joy in darkness/race pain via gratefulness/hope. Middle of five; chaotic SoCal home; race from 7; soccer love; Stanford/Berkeley/Dartmouth interest; mom
Diane Moffettbreast cancer when Sally 14; died four weeks after Sally's 17th birthday; encouraging parent gone; father emotionally/physically abusive then sick/arrested; year of monthly blows; prayers why some hurt so much; mom's last honesty: life hard, you strong enough; mom's end peace/hope → Sally wants that; faith in Christ as hope/joy/strength; prayer as quiet place. Yellow Runner beacon; running = shiny object/excuse; hurt binds empathy; grass withers / need unconditional; unique purpose only lived by living; racing gentle discomfort with known 100-mile end vs life without visible finish; keep map/hope; strong because made by strong creator.
Michael Chandler: MMA is what he does not who he is; shiny object to show layers (mission, wife/kids treatment); gratitude as Superman feeling; no me without God; masterpiece for kids/grandkids; called beyond mediocrity; proud of person built on other side of accomplishments.
Cherish / remember: September 2023 and Levi's one more
Jim Carter town legend killing 6x6 every September bruised Cam's ego; dream hunt all September blocked by SUB job until enough PTO 2010 (no sick days). Sept 2023: first adult September without nine-to-five pileup after 26 years SUB; retire to hunt/podcast full-time; Idaho→Utah→Colorado→San Carlos→Oregon coast Roosevelt; bittersweet death/mercy balance; home-state bull since 1989 first; 34 years between first/last bull in telling; purpose then and now; still feels impossible some days. Herrigel Zen in the Art of Archery inset: contest of archer with himself; other eyes/measures.
Levi Morgan: early career broke; rock masonry; wife: no entry money; almost quit; dad pays one more tournament; 16 points back; fear drops; world-record score still unbroken in his telling; first pro win; cry with dad; God message "without me you ain't doing this"; still gives glory when not feeling it.
Practice / live / legacy: LRS family, Taylor, Wayne, Roy's field
Daily Lift Run Shoot with others. Local outliers: brother Taylor Spike crushing after addiction war; brutal races cherished; every mile means something; purpose > everyone-else-doing-it; make people smile/inspire; podcast mutual pride. Wayne Endicott (Bow Rack; Roy second customer decades ago; Lisa LRS favorite): not raised Christian; 18 "rottenest"; youth pastor where-if-die question; prayer felt clean; later dark/broken marriage; Roy modeled sensitive faith; still grieves Roy "once-in-lifetime"; comfort Roy went as he would choose. Neighbor Carl colon cancer; Wayne argues with nudge to pray, delays; Carl dies next morning; later learns two men led Carl to Christ that night; stamp: obey prompts; life short; salt and light or nobody; street ministry now with archery message of life.
Cam jealous of blind trust faith; mind adversary; up/down. Roy knew purpose; believed in purposeless Cam; greenhorn wilderness purpose → want best backcountry bowhunter. Irony: Roy never wanted "best bowhunter" legacy. Roy quote: legacy everything/little to do with hunting; talents to affect people for good; hunting world = mission field; respect via accomplishments so hard world listens. Cam: still is; LRS guests' faith shares widen field to whole world; wants continue legacy. Funny path: hated public speaking; first Eugene Sportsmen's Show ~8 attendees (5 family) ~25 years ago; still prefers writing; podcast listening/lessons. Never felt "purpose" label early; $189 mom Christmas bow enough. Criticism for bringing too many into bowhunting; answers with Fred Bear print/video, Chuck Adams recognizability, Courtney/Jordan sharing; healthy humans share what pushes purposeful life; to critics: buckle up, just getting started.

Chapter 10 map: find, serve, joy, legacy.
Become Undeniable (closing motto)
Not born undeniable; most lack greatness at birth; refusal to accept lack defines them. Maybe undeniable = refuse/reject current path and rewrite story. Do not wake up undeniable; work up; keep waking and working day after day. Dedicated craft + believed skills: only mirror makes dreams real. Saying right things without belief is tough. Starts with purpose; know yours. Writer/doctor/artist/carpenter expected at calling; come September expect Cam roaming mountains bow in hand; his purpose. Bottom line and breaking point; how far/deep belief. Yesterday means nothing; "Nobody cares. Work harder!"; no rest on laurels; job never finished. Greatest regret = unfulfilled potential; end question: did I give all I had; only you know; if tomorrow never comes answer may be no; start giving today. Greatest day might be today; block noise; write passion; follow purpose; tunnel focus; unwavering determination; tenacious because it will suck; disciplined because uncomfortable; confident; resilient; consistent; tough; become ROY TOUGH. That is how you become undeniable.
Branlin / Shockey family
Jim Shockey as early Cam template (bandana, hard work, writing). Eva LRS: long-range bow, professional jealousy, living up to brand. Branlin's non-hunter identity inside a hunting dynasty forces purpose sideways into story craft. Six-month crash course becomes decades. Didion storytelling-to-live; impact over antler scorekeeping; weekend-adventure disconnection critique from forts/forest to adult necessity-only living; wants creative medium to reconnect. Cam humbled by partnership and different light on hunting.
Tulsi: aquifer to doors
Ocean literacy → aquifer landfill fight → teen proof that signatures beat greased wheels → beach trash futility → kids' storm-drain-to-surf lessons → age-21 serve-now over bachelor's delay → shy door courage powered by mission not credentials → win → service/prayer constant through politics in and out → presidential-run confidence from same door-knock purpose → reject horse-race politics → faith for courage without Washington validation. Mountain rock honesty parallels military honesty.
Impact mosaic
Nedd: un-takeable wealth vs lasting impact; pebble ripples. Dakota: for vs against; hope speech; many valid coach paths if impact is good. Huberman: share widely, gain teachers, generous resources, regeneration aim. Prison: scale changes, practice does not; impact adjacent humans. Viscott gift chain. Hafer: positive fuel army; refuse toxic brokerage; public eye cost accepted. Cam amazement at bowhunter inspiration lines (weight loss, hunt journeys).
Sally / Chandler
Joy rooted in gratefulness/hope can exist inside race darkness; happiness fleets. Mom brave four-week-post-birthday death; dad abuse/arrest cascade; worth-living prayers; mom's hard-life honesty as parenting template; end-of-life peace as desired destination; Jesus faith as daily get-out-of-bed source; running shiny object; hurt enables compassion ministry; fade of grass/flowers/man-made; unique purpose requires living; race finish lines teach life without visible ends; creator-strength belief changes life. Chandler: layers under fighter object; gratitude Superman; masterpiece painting; seasons of accomplishment and idleness; proud of built person.
September / Levi / local outliers
Carter 6x6 obsession; PTO-only full September from 2010; 2023 retirement removes office debt; multi-state whirlwind to Oregon Roosevelt; softening mercy balance; 1989↔present purpose continuity; Herrigel self-contest. Levi: masonry, empty entry fund, almost quit, dad finances one more, 16 back, fearless gunning, still-unbroken personal WR score, cry call, God-dependence read, ongoing glory reflex when unconfident. Taylor: addiction exit, race purpose, inspire others, podcast brother pride. Wayne: dark-heart honest answer, clean prayer, Roy as faith mirror, Carl delayed obedience, two-men-led salvation news as stamp, salt/light warning at 61, street ministry + archery message. Cam's uneven faith vs their trust; Roy believed first; mission-field quote; LRS as widened field; speaking hate-to-habit arc from 8-person seminar; $189 bow origin; growth-sharing defense vs burnout critics.
Purpose verbs as chapter spine
Find (bowhunt / Branlin film). Embrace (Tulsi service). Share (Nedd/Dakota/Huberman/prison/Hafer). Love (Sally joy, Chandler gratitude). Cherish (September 2023). Remember (Levi one-more). Practice (daily LRS). Live (Taylor, Wayne). Legacy (Roy mission field widened). Kip known-for savage mountain man. Viscott give gift away. Become Undeniable checklist: mirror, purpose, September identity, yesterday means nothing, nobody cares work harder, unfulfilled potential question, ROY TOUGH stack of traits (tenacious, disciplined, confident, resilient, consistent, tough).
Additional purpose beats: Once We Were Wolves million-plus views; Branlin finance-major detour; Eva trailblazer entrepreneur mother; Joan Didion citation; forts-and-forest nostalgia as diagnosis; Tulsi landfill senate-buddy fight; storm-drain education for grades 1-3; "be the change" statehouse; thousands of doors; prayer for service unknown next ten steps; Nedd 50 marathons / cross-country context as Cam frames impact; Huberman share-not-hoard revelation; prison adjacent impact; Hafer toxic vs positive fuel; Sally Choose Strong; Diane Moffett timeline; Yellow Runner; Chandler masterpiece seasons; Jim Carter 6x6 envy; 26-year SUB; 2023 multi-state September; Herrigel other measures; Levi dad pay-one-more; Taylor Keep Hammering brother love; Wayne Carl stamp and street corners; Roy mission-field respect theory; Eugene Sportsmen's Show five-family math; Fred Bear / Chuck Adams / Courtney / Jordan sharing defense; buckle-up closing to hunting critics.
Staying On Top
Worthy of sufferings; walk the path
Dostoyevsky line Cam loves: dreads not to be worthy of his sufferings. Bowhunting exposes/crushes/can change life; difference vs marathon: a life at stake; hurt deep because animal + arrow work; when it works, purposeful; hunter/hunted; mercy matters for the bowhunter (Cam's framing). Greats vs average: knowing the path ≠ walking it; results show doers. Talent cannot compete; lean on work; without hard work, nothing; outwork often enough; people dislike competing with the unquitting; keep hammering; good things follow (his guarantee claim).
Stack of proof; poser rock; will not hope
on Marcus Aurelius: "Life itself is but what we deem it" (eight most profound words in Chris's view); experiences happen; impact is the story you tell yourself; framing largely determines experience; faith/confidence/undeniable stack of proof that you can deal with what is put in front. Cam: has a big stack; means nothing if he sits on it. Cam paraphrase of the Marcus move: one word on the carry rock:
POSER; written to himself because some call him poser and he half feels fraud; other side Isaiah
54:17"No weapon formed against thee shall prosper"; listen to haters, prove wrong, remember; less listening as life improves; positivity power; outliers impact positive; he wants continue.
Prove-it conditions: dark rainy 37°F morning run keeps honest. Life challenges after quit wallowing/excuses/bottle/pills: get wet, dry out; world bigger than you; people need strong to lead/lean on; fight good fight; wallowing pathetic (he was that person). Everybody hurts; keep pushing; pain will pass; clouds part; key word will not mere hope; "Tomorrow will be better" over "I hope." Ultras: night to sunrise reenergizes; hymn mercies morning by morning. New mercies hanging with outliers; shared pain builds intimate trust.
Mountain and rock are not leaving; keep climbing. If you are undeniable: he is listening, watching, learning. Wall ask: have what it takes; become undeniable; get to work.
Epilogue: grind, proof, climb.
| Epilogue move | Practice |
|---|---|
| Worthy of sufferings | Choose hard arenas that expose you |
| Walk the path | Results over path-knowledge talk |
| Stack of proof | Keep adding; do not sit |
| Poser rock | Carry the word; prove mornings |
| Will > hope | Tomorrow will be better |
| Shared pain | Train/talk with outliers |
| Get to work | Mountain/rock still there |
Forty-year mountain and the honest morning
Sixteen-year-old twenty-mile world versus fifty-six-year-old global hunt/run/learn ledger: blood and sweat as tuition. Dostoyevsky worthiness dread explains love of a sport that can crush. Path-knowledge crowds vs walking-results minority. Work as only lever when talent lacks; unquitability as competitive inconvenience to others. Williamson/Aurelius framing: story you tell yourself about events is the impact engine; stack of proof must stay active. POSER on the rock is self-addressed; Isaiah reverse is haters-to-proof fuel; positivity as chosen fuel matching outliers in the book. Thirty-seven-degree rain runs as honesty exams. Post-wallow clear eyes: lead or be leanable; critical times make wallowing waste (he owns past version).
