The Book in Brief
The argument in brief
- Introduction. Honest book, not re-rehearsed history: Marino is a card-carrying depressive whom Kierkegaard pulled back from the rope; two strands of existentialism; he keeps the literary/practical one; Seneca's "take home some good thing every day."
- Ch 1 Anxiety. Cioran, Rieff, pharma vocabulary vs Kierkegaard's dizziness of freedom; sit with anxiety; educate unto faith; one fear drives out another.
- Ch 2 Depression and despair. One in eight Americans medicated; depression ≠ despair; three selves; happiness as despair's hiding place; earnestness; Chödrön without despair.
- Ch 3 Death. Niagara youth vs bedside maturity; Ivan Ilych; objective facts vs personal meaning; At a Graveside mistakes; reset priorities; include sadness.
- Ch 4 Authenticity. Minnesota Nice; Camus "never try to seem"; Rieff earring; Heidegger fallenness/jolt; create-self vs given-self fracture; Freedom Riders.
- Ch 5 Faith. Eagle ignored; church beside Bud Lite; Unamuno; knight of faith; pray for faith you lack; trust as faith.
- Ch 6 Morality. Sudden tests; Climacus makes life harder; Sartre responsibility; Nietzsche caution; regret changes the pray-er.
- Ch 7 Love. Works of Love: presuppose love; duty; self-love to receive; Dostoyevsky active love; grief as modern leprosy.
- Epilogue. Survival guide ≠ happiness Baedeker; life is gift and challenge; mask/authenticity tension; create vs given self left open.
Book spine: seven trials, then love as work.
Two legs: trials then tasks.
Two strands; Marino keeps the second.

Introduction
Marino biography as case.
Honest book, Seneca's test
Seneca (4 BC-AD 65): "He who studies with a philosopher should take home with him some good thing every day; he should daily return home a sounder man." Marino applies that to decades with Kierkegaard and followers. Either he was made sounder, or he was wasting time. If sounder, he can pass nuggets; if not, chart history and shut up. Philosophy here is love of wisdom, not knowledge: a pretheoretical understanding of how to live.
The blank page put him "on the canvas, or rather in bed." Writing feels like confrontation with the void inside. For all blessings he places himself on the miserable end of the spectrum: clinically a depressive; since borderline-criminal days he has tried kindness toward students, yet is neither moral hero nor contented riser. The existentialists themselves are a "veritable cadre of neurotics." So who is he to prescribe?
What existentialism is (and is not)
Existentialists ask about the meaning of life when everyday anchorage fails. Roster is disputed: only Sartre briefly accepted the label. Marino's own anthology included Camus; David Cooper denies Camus because Camus does not aim to reduce alienation. Thoreau, Kierkegaard's contemporary, is fair to tab existentialist though rarely anthologised. No unifying creed; shared themes.
Two strands; Marino keeps the second.
- Disenchantment of nature (Weber). Science displaces faith; Copernicus ends the theatre with Earth at centre and God watching.
- Nation-states. Feudal place in cosmos and society breaks; everyone no longer knows their slot.
- After WWI. Abattoir of reason's failure; readers turn to writers who grasp life is not dictated by reason.
- After WWII and Holocaust. Interest rockets; humankind again proves what it is capable of.
- Mid-century Anglo-America. Analytic philosophy and logical positivism (Carnap) rule campuses: untestable propositions not worth thinking about.
At Penn in the early 1980s, a renowned analytic professor read Kierkegaard's spaghetti sentence aloud and chuckled with pity: "How could any reasonable person take this spaghetti plate full of words seriously?" Leitmotif of the book: "The self is a relation that relates itself to itself or is the relation's relating itself to itself in the relation."
Existentialists (except Heidegger) antipathy toward academic philosophy. Kierkegaard: professors as tapeworms living in doghouses next to castles of abstraction. Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus did not draw university checks. Nietzsche resigned Basel, called himself dynamite, called professors "conceptual mummifiers."
Strand one: existential phenomenology
Taproot: epistemological worries. Brentano: mental events are intentional, always refer beyond themselves; the pine tree just is. Ego-centric predicament: all contact mediated by ideas. Husserl: "back to the things themselves"; bracket existence questions; pure description; glimpse as children again. Sartre's Nausea: Roquentin and the chestnut root; function as suction pump does not explain the concrete particular. Sartre's keyhole voyeur: shame flips subject to object; being-with and being-for-others as structure of consciousness. Analytic verdict (Wittgenstein): "language gone on a holiday." Sample opaque line from Being and Nothingness quoted to show the gap.
Strand two: literary, practical (this book's company)
Edifying truth over new facts.
Kierkegaard, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Unamuno, Camus: ability to move language; fierce engagement with real life. Mythos vs logos: these writers combine both; stories transmit how to live. Kierkegaard primarily a poet in Romantic/Goethe line; invented indirect communication.
- Essentials already known. How to be righteous and faithful does not wait on new facts; Dylan: you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows; you don't need an ethics professor for right and wrong.
- Need passion. A passionate relationship to ideas; mythos pricks conscience and augments care.
- Edifying truth. Journal at 21: "Only the truth that edifies is the truth for Thee." Hunger for truths that build you up, not necessarily make you happier.
- Argument as story. Plato modelled argument on geometry; existential argument is description in which you see yourself or you don't.
Camus, Nagel, objective suicide
Hume left puzzles in the study for billiards. Existentialists, like Stoics, treat philosophy as way of life. Camus opens Myth of Sisyphus: only truly serious philosophical problem is suicide; whether life is worth living first; rest is games. Collision: innate craving for meaning vs universe as indifferent as rock. Counsel: put the revolver back; "There is no fate that cannot be surmounted by scorn."
Thomas Nagel: Camus a mite hysterical; absurd from capacity for two perspectives (everyday vs sub specie aeternitatis); prescribe irony. Kierkegaard's Two Ages: the objective thinker is actually a suicide, choking the self-interest that animates spirit. Meaning paramount both generally and particularly: Climacus will later pile death facts then grab lapels: facts do not show what it means that I will die. First-person, inside-out.
Authenticity and "existence precedes essence"
Social media era: appearances over reality; email auto-replies ("Oh no. Get well soon") as inhuman. Kierkegaard rarely used "authenticity"; Nietzsche did not lionize it; late 50s/60s marriage of terms. Americans feared phoniness (Catcher, Gray Flannel Suit, Death of a Salesman). Sartre 1946: "existence precedes essence"; scissors made to cut; humans not made by God with a plan; we are who we choose. Moods: not mere psychologists' toys; anxiety conveys self-understanding; depression can instruct in powerlessness and dependency on God. Critics: too bleak. Young athlete with rheumatoid arthritis: identity and anxiety-coping built on six-pack abs; must sustain kind heart amid anger. Saint Paul: "groaning of existence." How we absorb blows is the life.
Camus Sisyphus.
Absurd: Camus vs Nagel.
Memoir: from Jersey Shore to stolen Works of Love
- Serge Kappler. Bowling Green professor; saw talent; checked high-school records; graduate Plato seminar; arranged Columbia transfer.
- Nikki. Wife; cutter; bourbon, drug associates; "Jim Dandy to the rescue"; left after Penn-day table flip; steely silence.
- Tom. Older brother in Maine; palm on shoulder: what to do with things if you take your life.
- Dr Beatrice Beebe. Five-year therapist; bodhisattva; healing power of relationships against pharmaceutical fundamentalism.
- Jake LaMotta / De Niro. Marino filled in at topless Times Square bar while Jake helped Raging Bull.
House of shouts; ice; Friday and maybe Wednesday fights; brother stopped mother stabbing father. Love and sacrifice present; battleground still damaged. Trouble in school and police; Bowling Green football; validation from melancholic father via no-hitters and touchdowns.
Kappler / Socrates toy on sidelines: "Coach, why would you want us to hurt someone?" Columbia: intimidated; boxing gyms; Golden Gloves finalist spar; pro contract; Broadway as Travolta; Baskin-Robbins: "I'm going to marry you"; marriage; Nikki's demonettes; table flip with .45 bartender; sleeveless seminars; black eyes as freak cachet; classmates choosing Harvard/Princeton; substance abuse short of heroin; handwritten rejections then Penn admit.
First day Penn epistemology: two hours, withdraw at registrar. Nikki catatonic then flips dining table and antique vase; leaves for good. Two years walking dead; St Luke's; MAO + red wine on release block. Maine cellar with Tom; return to parents; Beebe appointment; coffee-shop used bookstore; dusty Works of Love; slip under coat; "deceived by not believing what is true."
Airplane flattop: "It always works out." Phone shows Hurricane Harvey flood; five dead; rain still torrential. No, it does not always work out. Existentialists address life as it is. Becker, May, Erikson, Tillich once believed in progress beyond functioning; now smiled at as naïve. Marino's offer: not step-by-step coping checklists, but how to keep moral and spiritual bearings when going under.
Two legs of the book
First leg: anxiety, depression, despair, death as trials. Second: authenticity, faith, morality, love as positive tasks that also challenge. Bicentennial of Kierkegaard was 2013; window still new for feelings that uproot care.

- Seneca test. After any philosophical reading, name one concrete way you are sounder, or admit waste.
- Strand check. Are you chasing ego-centric epistemology or a story that changes how you relate to a mood?
- Edify filter. Ask of a "truth": does it build the person, or only feed curiosity?
- Harvey test. Refuse "it always works out" as spiritual anesthesia.
Anxiety
Anxiety: invent, flee, or abide.
Institutions rewrite the lexicon.
Morning blizzard
Thoughts claw; the world seems to snarl. Anxiety is not always about a present object; it invents pretexts (Cioran). Flight paths: busyness, substances, scrolling. Third path: sit with it and learn what it discloses about the ultimate. Marino's practice: notice the inventiveness of dread before treating every spike as medical emergency alone.
Vocabulary shift: sin to synaptics
Institutions rewrite the lexicon.
Two teachers; Marino favors Dane.
| Era lexicon | What it names | What it hides |
|---|---|---|
| Christian | Sin, temptation, spirit | Can moralize illness |
| Early psychoanalytic | Anal, denial, neurosis | Can reduce spirit to stage |
| Pharma gospel | Chemical imbalance | Can erase meaning of mood |
| Kierkegaard | Dizziness of freedom | Needs clinical care when acute |
Institutions rewrite the lexicon; Marino wants the fourth column audible again.
- Freud. Danger signal; often linked to childhood; uncover the past; aim to cure the symptom.
- Kierkegaard. Dizziness before possibility; sit with it; educate unto faith; one fear can drive out another (finite fears under infinite concern).
- Marino's tilt. Respects therapy and meds (his own history) but refuses to let the Dane be replaced by the DSM alone.
Cliff: fear vs urge
Freedom, not height, shakes gut.
Stand at a cliff: fear of falling (outer danger) and the uncanny urge to leap (anxiety as awareness of choice). Freedom, not height, shakes the gut. Spiritless people can have little anxiety because they have little sense of possibility; anxiety marks that one is a self that can choose.
Defenses that fail
Defenses fail; welcome anxiety.
Self theories; strong self held.
- Look to others / rank. Social comparison as anxiolytic; anxiety returns when rank slips.
- Weed and cycles of control. Temporary mute; rebound.
- Shrewd calculation. Anxiety outruns the plan.
- Welcome it. Sit; name; refuse the pretext-hunt for a spell.
Self theories parade: Hume's bundle of perceptions; narrative self; Zen empty mirror; Kierkegaard's spirit-self as relation. Marino holds a strong self that can relate well or poorly to its moods.
- Kierkegaard. Anxiety as dizziness of freedom; educate unto faith.
- Freud. Danger-signal model; uncover past.
- Cioran. Anxiety invents objects.
- Rieff / therapeutic age. Lexicon of the consulting room replaces sin-talk.
- Pretext pause. When dread spikes, wait ten minutes before inventing the story of why.
- Cliff note. Name the freedom inside the fear (what choice is shimmering).
- One fear. Ask what ultimate concern could reorder the swarm of finite fears.
- Meds and meaning. Keep both: chemical help when needed; meaning-work when able.

Depression and Despair
Central distinction, Chapter 2.
Caesar-or-nothing misses third.
Depression is not despair
| Depression | Despair | |
|---|---|---|
| Register | Heavy mood; medical target | Spiritual sickness of self |
| Feel? | Often felt as weight | Can hide in busyness or joy |
| Agency | Hard to choose well | How one relates to mood and self |
| Cure talk | Pills, therapy, sleep | Relate differently; faith/earnestness |
Central distinction of Chapter 2: treat mood and still ask about relation.
Three selves
Caesar-or-nothing misses third.
Forms of despair.
- Concrete self. The MCAT grind, the finite facts.
- Ideal self. Doctor dream, Caesar-or-nothing.
- Third self. God / moral ideal / the self before which one stands.
- Despair: trying to be rid of oneself, or to be a self one is not, while missing the third.
Forms: dreamer (too infinite); spreadsheet person (too finite); wanting to be other (Caesar); joy as mask.
Black sun, rage, pills
Depression to spiritual risk.
Mood to earnestness.
Freud: depression as rage turned on the self; ego sinks. Marino: pill plus guilt about agency; still, how you relate can move. Black sun of victimhood tempts. Earnestness ≠ happiness: observing ego steps outside the mood-cloud; death's scarcity makes a year of life worth care; third eye against acedia (noon demon).
- Mood sweeps (hostility, weight, emptiness).
- Observing ego steps outside the cloud.
- Earnestness: care about what matters, not cheerfulness.
- Death's scarcity sharpens the year.
- Guard against acedia: the not-caring that feels like wisdom.
- Kierkegaard (Sickness unto Death). Despair forms; three selves.
- Freud. Melancholia as rage at self.
- Pema Chödrön. Stay; do not add despair to pain.
- Farrington / clinical voices. Meds as real help; Marino includes them.
- Name the register. "I feel heavy" vs "I want to be rid of this self."
- Third self check. What moral or sacred ideal are you standing before, if any?
- Joy audit. Is cheerfulness a mask over refusal of the self?
- Earnestness over mood. One cared-for act while depressed beats waiting to feel inspired.

Death
Ivan: death teaches living.
Facts ≠ appropriation.
Objective facts vs personal appropriation
Facts ≠ appropriation.
Mistaken death thoughts.
Climacus piles acid facts (Napoleon dies, the fifth act comes). None of that shows what it means that I die. Epicurus's "when I am, death is not" tries to stand outside; Kierkegaard jabs that you cannot take a vacation from being the one who dies.
| False comfort | Kierkegaardian jab |
|---|---|
| Death is sleep | Not rest you enjoy; annihilation of the enjoyer |
| Great equalizer | Does not make dying personal work easier |
| Eat, drink, be merry | Clinging disguised as wisdom |
| Epicurus outside | You are never outside your own death |
Ivan Ilych
Ivan: death teaches living.
Death resets; keep sadness.
Do everything "right": career, house, decorum. Curtain falls in pain. Deny, isolate, resent. Gerasim the peasant tells the truth: we all die. Ivan's breakthrough: forgive; the false self breaks; living opens at the edge of dying.
- Face personal appropriation ("I shall die"), not only statistics.
- Drop false comforts (sleep, equalizer, merry, Epicurus).
- Let scarcity reorder the calendar.
- Repair what can be repaired now.
- Keep sadness as truthful affect.
- Write one sentence that only works if you die: what must be said now.
- Calendar scarcity. Cut one finite vanity this week.
- Refuse Epicurus dodge. When death talk goes abstract, return to "I".

Authenticity
Seeming to appropriated act.
Chapter 4 fracture line.
Seeming vs being
Fifties TV families vs Holden and Willy Loman. Today: profile management; Chuck Klosterman: Gen X envies and despises authenticity. Sheehy/Taylor "tent for tentativeness" / follow your passion as ersatz essence; Gauguin-to-Tahiti as authentic creep problem.
Rieff scene.
Fall, jolt, return.
Rieff and the earring
Philip Rieff, Downton formality, top hat and monocle, decorum as last wall. Marino in jeans, dashiki, gold earring: "Why do you dress like a thug?" Marino's defense: stay true to Jersey Shore working-class hero self. Rieff reads the attachment as secure enough that Marino does not explode the relationship that molded him. Memoir caveat: conversations are part fiction.
Mike Tyson: "Guys like you and me..." Marino's boxing-writer charade nearly believed; shame at seeming.
Heidegger: fallenness and jolt
Dasein as opening; fallen into They/crowd; identity from trivia. Jolt: death, anxiety, outermost possibility; return toward ownmost. Adorno's Jargon of Authenticity: gauzy empty chatter warning. Yacobi: authenticity as construct, absolutes fruitless. Kierkegaard: spiritual speech is metaphorical; Nietzsche: truth a mobile army of metaphors.
- Nietzschean path. Create values and self; become who you are by making.
- Kierkegaardian path. Self is given before God; task is to become that self transparently.
- Marino. Lives the tension; Freedom Riders as authenticity of deed over brand.
Chapter 4 fracture line.

Faith
Doubt to trust.
Fear and Trembling.
Lose faith or push it away?
Church doors; question surfaces. Scientific marvels (black holes, quarks) still feel less stretch than Virgin Birth. Anselm's ontological argument as reductio; Marino's classroom line: if faith were grounded in reason there would be no need for faith; you cannot climb to heaven on syllogisms. Student challenge: why give reason then lurk beyond it?
Camus, Sisyphus, philosophical suicide
Camus Sisyphus.
Unamuno strand.
Innate hunger for meaning vs rock-indifferent universe. Sisyphus returns, punished to roll; scorn/consciousness as Camus's fidelity to absurd. Nietzsche abyss; Schopenhauer's children before the curtain condemned to life. Escape hatches: noose, or "philosophical suicide" (transcendent sense-maker). Frankl / Nietzsche why: many find purpose; Camus not the only mood.
Silentio in Fear and Trembling: without eternal consciousness, life would be despair... then "But precisely for that reason it is not so." Camus reads the addendum as philosophical suicide; Marino's confession: Kierkegaard was his therapist into taking faith seriously.
Ingratitude, Louisville Slugger, Unamuno
Dostoyevsky: ungrateful bipeds. Miracle shrugged into coincidence. Bat attack in 1970s Manhattan; forearm snaps Louisville Slugger; prayer of thanks fades. Unamuno: hunger for immortality; reason vs heart agon; Quixote trust; doubt as fuel; pray as holy fool.
Fear and Trembling.
- Infinite resignation: give Isaac / give the finite dream.
- Tragic hero stops at resignation; knight of faith double-moves.
- Outwardly same life; inwardly different trust.
- Faith = trust without proof; pray for the faith you lack.
- Doubt remains companion, not disqualifier.
- Push or lose? Journal whether a faith-lapse was theft or shove.
- Resignation inventory. What finite good must be released before trust?
- Holy fool prayer. Pray for faith while admitting doubt aloud.

Morality
Morality as difficulty.
Sartre freedom fork.
Sudden tests
Friend emails: drop-off, man in next car. Sickbed mentor: late innings; interminable pain; good memories threatened; what to do? Morality arrives as difficulty, not seminar puzzle.
Sartre: boy, mother, Free French
Sartre freedom fork.
Nietzsche moral strand.
Young man: brother killed by Nazis; mother lives for him; join Free French or stay? Christian charity names both neighbors. Gut feelings: Sartre blocks; talk of feelings is endless and chosen. No objective rulebook; still must choose; responsible as if for all humanity. Freedom, anxiety, responsibility linked; impulse to escape is bad faith. Texas Tower Whitman documentary: brain tumor narrative as modern escape from freedom; Sartre: coward responsible for cowardice; not born hero or coward; moral U-turns possible.
Nietzsche: genealogy and caution
Death of God; philologist of morals; master/slave; goodness once meant noble power, later peace/kindness via resentment invert. Create values: yes, with danger of cruelty. Marino's caution: diverse instruction; do not take genealogy as license.
| Thinker | Moral pressure | Escape hatch he blocks |
|---|---|---|
| Climacus | Make life harder | Easy edification |
| Sartre | Choose; responsible for all | Gut, nature, tumor, "born that way" |
| Nietzsche | Genealogy; create; watch power | Sacred conscience as innocent |
| Kierkegaard | Neighbor; regret forms self | Pseudo-regrets; forgetting |
Regret changes the pray-er
Florida pool retiree chat; night incubus of selfish memory; moral regrets in deep storage while pseudo-regrets are performed. Affect of the memory matters (Freud/Kierkegaard). Prayer does not change God; it develops the one praying. Regret likewise: cannot rewind, can change who you are in relation to the act. "To live afresh is to be morally born again."
Morality as difficulty.
Adorno jargon
Dasein opening
- Test arrives without syllabus.
- Refuse bad-faith escapes (gut alone, nature, diagnosis as destiny).
- Choose under anxiety; own the choice.
- Hold Nietzschean suspicion of power in "goodness."
- Let regret educate the self; live afresh.
- Next sudden test. Name two neighbors the "Christian answer" would split; choose anyway.
- Bad-faith audit. Where do you say "that's just who I am"?
- Regret practice. One stored moral regret: write how it should change today's conduct, not only tonight's mood.

Love
Duty, presuppose, self-relate.
Presuppose love.
Miss her
Forty-year friend; tumultuous marriage; fury and silence; funeral missed; phone: the powerful phrase of missing. Triad: give, find, accept. Greeks: eros, agape, philia (and storge in the wider map). Existentialists often wry, even denying escape from self-love.
Sartre, Camus, the Fall
Two teachers of love.
Greek map + presuppose.
No Exit: hell is other people as fixed objects; limo years Camden-Portland as lived echo. Stranger: Meursault beach for feelings; Fall: Jean-Baptiste in Amsterdam; guilt without forgiveness; true love "two or three times a century"; rest vanity. Everyday sacrifice still happens; cynics dismiss it. Kierkegaard: defraud yourself of love by probability-calc; hardheaded loss of the precious.
Regine and Works of Love
Kierkegaard breaks thirteen-month engagement to Regine Olsen; depression, melancholy, authorship calling; poignancy that he may have defrauded himself. Yet Works of Love teaches duty love, not mood love: presuppose love in the other (and in yourself); build, do not only find.
- See love hidden in the other; duty sees what mood misses.
- Love as work, not weather.
- Self-love (non-narcissist) required to receive nurture.
- Paradox: need others' love to love self; need self-love to be nurtured.
- Grief and rage still bond; modern "leprosy" of grievers needs presence.
Father's rampage, wedding squabble
Boyhood: martini rampage; fear. Adult: loud squabble at son's wedding; soul naked; resent being seen; not Underground Man; apologizes; sons saw the vanished side. Self-hatred orgies: go through motions; cannot receive warmth. Jesus's commandment requires proper self-love first.
- Zosima / active love. Hell as inability to love; open suffering; build.
- Works of Love. Duty; neighbor; presuppose; self-love to receive.
- Shared. Love is work against vanity and despair, not a feeling that arrives complete.
- Presuppose drill. In one hard relationship, act for a day as if love is hidden there.
- Receive test. Accept one kindness without self-hatred deflection.
- Grief presence. Sit with a griever without fixing; refuse leprosy exile.

Not a happiness tour
Impediments registered as in language-learning or exercise: anxiety, depression, despair, death. Gift + challenge from Kierkegaard to Camus. Plato's Seventh Letter: books doubtful; Jesus, Buddha, Socrates left no writings. Still, ethics courses end with distilled insights; so does this book.
Distilled spine

Book spine: seven trials, then love as work.
- Self-relating creatures; feelings inform relation even when unnoticed.
- Anxiety: message with cognitive component; anxious in the right way about the right thing.
- Depression dragon vs despair of the self; black sun can widen empathy (Kristeva).
- Death: abstract ≠ personal; earnest reflection values every moment.
- Morality: fire when right burns happiness; Nietzsche watches power in conscience.
- Faith: offense or reason's happy relation to paradox; faith as how you relate to unbelief.
- Authenticity: undefined like a square; Trilling/Nietzsche on masks; create vs given self fracture left walking.

- Gerasim truth: all die; denial isolates.
- Rieff earring: working-class hero can be inauthentic attachment.
